Turbo Air. After the refresh of the Air’s case in autumn of last year, we now see completely new internal hardware based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge technology. The extremely thin aluminium chassis remains unchanged, still setting the bar for attractiveness, overall feel, and slenderness.

If you need a super portable laptop that is still pretty capable, get the 11-inch MacBook Air. If you need something that offers a bit more power and a smidge better resolution, go for the 13-inch form factor. You’ll be getting a great operating system in the form of OS X Lion, and a lot of amazing built-in software, such as iMovie. OS X is no longer remarkably better than Windows since Windows 7 came out, but the free apps like iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand have no match on Microsoft’s side.

Apple's MacBook Air 13 redesign offers some significant improvements to the premiere ultrathin platform. The new Core i5 processor and 4GB of memory are a marked improvement in performance over the past model. Add to this the inclusion of the backlit keyboard and Thunderbolt port and it has become even more functional.

The latest and, at 13 inches, largest version of the MacBook Air series is undoubtedly the best. Over the previous generations it offers a better processor, a backlit keyboard and a Thunderbolt connector, while leaving everything that made its predecessors so attractive intact. It's still not cheap, but it has gained that vital bit of credibility as a worthwhile premium laptop solution, and is now worth its asking price. For many, PCs costing half the price offer a better, more sensible solution, but the MacBook Air remains king of the ultraportable brigade.

We think that the MacBook Air is absolutely marvelous. It is thanks to Apple, who persevered in the direction in which they think they should, that we are able to get the MacBook Air today. Instead of letting the MacBook Air die a novelty (Dell Adamo?) when faced with poor sales, they chose instead to turn the MacBook Air into one of the mainstays of the Mac family.

When Apple released the re-designed Air in 2010, we gave it a score of 8.5 out of 10 and an editor’s choice award. At the time, we were impressed by the performance of the Air, considering its absurdly thin size. Now the qualifier to that statement can be removed. The second-gen Intel Core i5 in the new model provides performance that is almost indistinguishable from a larger laptop.

Bigger, more powerful and with a higher battery life than its 11.6-inch version, the MacBook 13.3-inch represents one of the - if not the - best choices for those looking for a powerful, mobile machine. Note however that a richer connectivity wouldn't go amiss as there still aren't very many thunderbolt compatible peripherals out there.

The Apple MacBook Air 13in (Mid-2011) that we reviewed carries the maximum memory and storage of 4GB and 256GB. If you can work with 128GB of flash storage, the price drops to £1099, which is unbeatable even amongst shabbier-built ultraportable imitators. At time of press, we couldn’t find any Wintel manufacturer that could match the 256GB model's specs.

The Air remains a relatively expensive proposition, but Apple's entry level MacBook offers excellent performance and portability. Apple claims that the MacBook Air's battery life is "up to seven" hours; it lasted almost six hours in our battery rundown test, where we looped an XviD file in full screen mode. Just like the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery.

But if none of these features are deal-breakers, the 2011 Macbook Air is the best ultraportable, nay laptop, in the land for day-to-day computing. Its combination of lightning speed, slim profile and the gesture-tastic Mac OS X Lion mean it melds the benefits of tablets (portability, usability) with the power of traditional laptops. And, to top it all, it's an incredibly lovely thing. We recommend adopting one as soon as financially possible.

Whereas last year's MacBook Air was a good machine for light work, the 2011 models are true replacements for mainstream portable Macs. There's still no dethroning the MacBook Pro (although the 13-inch model clearly needs a higher resolution display option), but for the rest of the world there are now some excellent ultra portable options that don't force you to really compromise on performance.

Buy one now. Really, it’s that good. Even if you’re not a Mac OS X person, but want a super-strong, impossibly thin yet powerful 13” ultraportable to run Windows, it’s hard to beat the 13” Thunderbolt Macbook Air. It’s capable enough to be your primary laptop unless you’re a serious 3D gamer, is gorgeous looking and has enough ports to get by on. Paired with Apple’s expensive Thunderbolt Display, it can even become a desktop replacement with Ethernet, FireWire 800 and additional USB ports. Battery life is excellent, instant-resume from standby is a joy and the SSD drive means no moving parts and better speed, and it comes with the impressive new Mac OS X Lion.

The 2011 MacBook Air addresses nearly every concern anyone could lob at its predecessor. It's still light on ports, the missing SD slot on the 11-inch model is a drag, and no, it isn't cheap, but this machine is fast, efficient, and not to be underestimated. It's a supermodel with a law degree from Columbia, a hunky motorcycle racer who looks good in leathers yet is also a concert pianist -- whatever your passion it won't disappoint, all while making a lot more room in your bag.

In short, that difficult decision between prioritizing portability and performance has pretty much been made for you: the MacBook Air grants you both. Build-quality is reassuringly strong, speed and performance are sufficient for most users, and the ability to drop the Air into a bag and hardly notice it’s in there is a huge advantage. In 13.3-inch form it’s a little more expensive than the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro (and you get a slower processor, less storage and no optical drive), but we’d wager the Air could still hold its own. Altogether, the MacBook Air remains our ultraportable of choice.

With the MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt), Apple did what it had to do to recapture some of the momentum it lost when the MacBook Pros and its Windows counterparts migrated over to the latest Intel components. Putting in the Core i5 processor, upping the standard memory configuration to 4GB, and having a new graphics subsystem translate into a significant performance improvement over the previous Air 13-inch. That and adding a Thunderbolt port, bringing back the backlit keyboard, and the timely release of Mac OS X Lion will surely make it a formidable player in the ultraportable space. But if its looks haven't seduced you yet, your money will go a lot further with the Toshiba Portege R835-P50X and Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431.

We already loved the 13-inch MacBook Air, and Apple's improvements make it the perfect notebook as far as we're concerned. When you combine a sleek ultraportable design with a great display and touchpad then nearly double the performance--without sacrificing battery life--you're left with a winner. You also get an improved backlit keyboard, Thunderbolt support, and the more powerful and versatle Mac OS X Lion. The 13-inch Air is also a better deal than the Samsung Series 9, which costs $50 more when you configure it with the same amount of flash memory. Add it all up and you have a machine that not only earns our Editors' Choice award but also a very rare five-star rating.

The Air was derided when it was first launched, and to some extent, rightly so. It was too slow and an example of form over function. With the 2011 refresh, Apple has managed to keep the remarkable form, but also add some internals that make this more than just a rich person's plaything. Now, the Air is an excellent day-to-day laptop, and one that we think most people will find more than adequate for their needs. Unless those needs are crunching the data that comes out of the CERN supercollider. If nothing else, Intel's Ultrabook specification proves that Apple had the right idea when it first launched the Air. There is demand for these small laptops, and it's possible to build them and make them objects of desire while remaining useful.

With the removal of the MacBook 13, the MacBook Air 11 is now Apple's least expensive laptop available. While the 2011 update has brought some marked improvement in performance, it doesn't address enough of the other issues to make it a great replacement for the MacBook Pro. It certainly is extremely small and light but this is not a great primary computer due to the memory and storage concerns.

Although it's technically a draw, the MacBook Air wins out in key areas of performance, interface and connectivity. The laptop is definitely the better option for productivity on the move, and can be used in an office because it has excellent specifications. Those who just want to browse the internet on the move would be better suited to the iPad 2. We recommend buying a Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 and using the extra money to invest in a mobile phone contract with a generous data allowance. The tablet can be tethered to the smartphone when Wi-Fi is not available, and this will save on having to pay two separate contracts. Given the choice, V3 definitely opts for the laptop over the tablet, as it is so much more useful and is definitely worth the extra investment. WINNER- MacBook Air.

Since the company has discontinued its popular white MacBook, the Apple MacBook Air 11in (Mid-2011) now stands alone as the most affordable Mac portable. At £849, you get 2GB memory and 64GB of solid-state drive; another £150 doubles both those specs to a decent 4GB and 128GB storage. Whether you’re a student or business professional, it’s a great carry-anywhere laptop with more power than we’d imagine was possible at this size, yet still providing decent battery life.

When the 11.6-inch MacBook Air was originally released in 2010, the word "netbook" was bandied about, as if the Air had anything in common with these portable, but not exactly powerful, mini laptops.

The Apple MacBook Air 11in (mid 2011) is clearly a machine for the well heeled, with a starting price of £850 and desirable configurations coming in over £1,000. Nonetheless, it is far from a frivolous purchase. Its styling and build are unrivalled, it has plenty enough performance for everyday computing, it'll at least half a working day on battery, and the improvements to MacOSX make it a lovely system to use. It does lack connectivity right out of the box (even eshewing the SD card slot of its 13in sibling) but, thanks to its ThunderBolt port, it can actually connect to just about anything you desire with the right adapter (once they become available). Many competitors are getting close but right now the Air is still flying high.

So how does the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) stack up in the category its predecessor shaped? It's certainly a fine laptop, with plenty of features you'll only get from Apple, like outstanding design, a highly refined multitouch trackpad, and OS X Lion. But you'll have to sacrifice several features that come standard on other 11-inch laptops, like all-day battery life, an Ethernet port, SD card reader, and significant storage space. The Editors' Choice Alienware M11xr3 and Lenovo X120e provide all these features, with superior performance to boot. When judged purely on its feature set the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) comes up short compared with its peers. But with its light weight, striking looks, and Apple's well-deserved reputation for reliability, the MacBook Air 11-inch (Thunderbolt) presents a compelling package for Apple devotees.

Last October, Apple's 11-inch MacBook Air debuted. The tiny, slim ultraportable was the smallest laptop Apple had ever made. This year's 11-inch MacBook Air improves on last year's model in several significant ways and is by far the fastest ultraportable you're likely to find, though some users will consider the limited flash storage space to be a hindrance.

We're just not sure consumers want to use an 11-inch laptop as their primary computer. Frequent travelers and students would, but a few family members and co-workers said they would prefer a larger 13-inch screen. Apple offers that, too, but you'll need to spend either $1,199 for the 13-inch MacBook Pro or $1,299 for the 13-inch MacBook Air. The 11-inch MacBook Air is a very good ultraportable, but some shoppers will prefer one of Apple's other options as an everyday notebook.

This revised 13in MacBook Air is a little bit faster in general speed, a lot faster in graphics speed – if only catching up with 2010’s Air – but with approaching an hour of extra battery life. We also appreciate the even quieter fan. This is the original ultrabook, and with extra details and quality touches it still beats all Ultrabooks we’ve seen so far.

The MacBook Air is in its third iteration of the current design and it's tangibly better than the two that came before it. The 2010 (and older) models are just plain slow by comparison. The mid-2012 MacBook Air is a very solid offering and continues to be a target for many notebook manufacturers, and for good reason. Four years after its unveiling, the Air is still one of the sexiest notebooks on the market and with the recent slight price adjustment, it seems to be competing well even on value terms. Intel is likely to put some extra pressure on the Air with second and third generation ultrabooks, many of which are shaping up to be real contenders, at least on paper. But even still, the Air is the system that all other Windows ultrabooks strive to be like and that’s quite the complement.

We aren't sure what has happened, but it very much appears that Apple laptops are no longer all that much more expensive than a decent PC. The Dell XPS 13 uses older tech, but still costs nearly the same as this 13-inch Air. Arguably, the Air offers a lot of advantages too. The screen is 16:10, which, for most computer use is far better than that stupid 16:9 ratio, foisted upon us by HD television.

The MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2012) is a great laptop for writers. It's light at less than 2.5 pounds, and even if you cart along the AC adapter, you're still carrying less than 3 pounds. It's speedy enough for day to day use, and its keyboard is more comfortable to use than the virtual keyboard on a tablet. Unfortunately, ultrabooks like the Asus Zenbook Prime have caught up in features: the UX31A is imperceptibly heavier, yet has a larger 1080p screen and much more storage space on its SSD. Full blown business ultraportables like the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X230 are better still at most tasks, including battery life and storage. Apple's 2012 refresh of the MacBook Air 11 brings with it some significant improvements from the past base $999 model but this isn't the huge revision many had hoped for. The chassis is still the same extremely thin and light platform as before making it the smallest of the 11-inch laptops on the market. A gentle breeze. Not a beat too late in the circannual rhythm, Apple updates their MacBook Air series. New on the inside: Current Haswell ULV processors. Out of keeping with the trend Apple themselves initiated, the new Air doesn't have a higher resolution display this time; the panel remains the same. Are the updates enough for the device to deserve to be called "new"?

So, we finally got around to testing the 2013 11" MacBook Air, with the brand-spanking new Mac OS Maverick. The 2013 edition of the 11" MacBook Air is a step up from the 2012 model in terms of battery life and heat dissipation. Unfortunately, the TN screen is still only so good and it has very few ports. For big-time Apple fans only.

I come away from the 11” Air with mixed feelings. The modern silicon and generally better specced 2013 model has turned the 11” Air into a far more well rounded notebook than it has been in the past, at least in base $999 form. Unfortunately, the rest of the picture isn’t as rosy.

Ridiculously long battery life highlights the latest 11.6-inch MacBook Air, which boasts the same skinny yet sturdy aluminum unibody design you've come to know and love.

The competition may be catching up, but the 2013 edition of the 11-inch MacBook Air remains a classy piece of kit. The Haswell update provides significant improvements in performance, graphics and battery life, and the premium prices charged for many Windows Ultrabooks means that it no longer looks over-priced when compared to its nearest rivals. It’s a shame that the 2013 update wasn’t a little more ambitious, but the 11-inch MacBook Air is still one of the most attractive ultraportable, netbook-size laptops currently available.

At $999, the Apple MacBook Air 11-inch (Mid 2013) is an attractive ultraportable. Still, for only $100 more, you can get the 13-inch MacBook Air with almost the same components, but with a larger screen and almost five more hours of battery life. We still recommend the 11-inch model for those who need portability more than any other factor, but the fact of the matter is that the 13-inch model is ultimately a better buy and continues as our Editors' Choice for mainstream ultraportable laptops.

Overall, there's a lot to love about the 11-inch MacBook Air. Although this 2013 update doesn't bring a change in design or display, it does bring a substantial performance boost. This may be a small form notebook, but there's plenty of power to tackle your daily computing needs. But overall, if you're after something light, portable and powerful, the the MacBook Air 11-inch still makes a great choice.

The MacBook Air that we tested is by no means a gaming powerhouse for mobile users but it proved to be just as capable as any other Haswell notebook on the market that isn’t using discrete graphics. Considering its small size, its impressive battery life and overall design, you should definitely check out our review of the 11-in model to see if it makes senses as the best current Ultrabook. There is a lot more mobility GPU testing coming up soon at PC Perspective including a full review of the MSI GE40 notebook. We also found some interesting issues with the GTX 760M discrete GPU and Optimus technology that will be posted soon as well.

Despite connectivity limitations, the design and raw power make the MacBook Air a worthwhile purchase for Apple fans or those looking for a change from the Windows platform. You can run any applications you'll need for business use, including Microsoft Office, and the trackpad and Mac OS X make the Air a pleasurable device to use. And the good news for first-time Air purchasers, is that they'll be getting extra battery life and storage space, still at the original 2011 price tag. So while the previous entry-level model would have set you back £849 for a 64GB, Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge model with around three and a half hours of battery life, you can now get your hands on a 128GB model running Intel Haswell and offering around eight hours of juice for the same price. However, savvy buyers might want to wait until autumn to get their hands on a MacBook Air running Mavericks.

Yes, its design may be getting long in the tooth, but the 11-inch MacBook Air still beats out the competition in the categories that matter. Its performance, aided by Intel's 4th-gen processor, tops that of other 11-inch ultraportables, the keyboard and touchpad remain excellent, and most importantly for an on-the-go notebook, this Air lasts nearly 9 hours on a charge.

Overall, I am quite satisfied with the 2013 11” MacBook Air. I think it’s a great option for people who aren’t the most demanding of their notebook, but crave flexibility from size, weight, and long battery life. If you aren’t into OS X however, the battery life results are quite disappointing, and it is difficult to recommend this machine unless we see a fix.

The 2013 MacBook Air 11-inch takes Apple's ultra-portable notebook a significant step in the right direction, but it's by no means a great leap forward. It makes advances in some key areas, most notably graphics performance and faster flash, but these are partly held back by the slower CPUs. Many will bemoan the lack of a Retina display too, at least as an optional extra. But factor in the better battery life and improved Wi-Fi, and the 2013 MacBook Air is a clear win overall.

We're living in a post-iPad age for PCs. Excellent battery life and supremely portable forms sometimes make me ask: why use a laptop, which has subpar battery life, at all? Apple’s new 11-inch Air goes a conservative route in 2013, emphasizing longer battery life and more affordable pricing over any big design changes. The battery boost alone might be worth it.

The updates to the 11-inch MacBook Air provide a very compelling reason for many to consider looking at an extremely portable laptop over a limited tablet system. Despite the swings-and-roundabouts benchmarking results, the new MacBook Air is a definite and significant step up from last year's release. The battery life is little short of incredible. Business travellers taking long flights and students who need it all day for lectures and then throughout the evening for writing an essay will love its all-day power. Could Apple shrink the Air and keep the screen size or notch it up an inch or more? A full HD Air, anyone? There’s probably a good reason for this ongoing big borders arrangement – rigidity, antennas and suchlike – but I think it’s time for Apple to show some design innovation again rather than simply adding the 802.11ac Wi-Fi and tweaking the latest Intel chippery.

The 13-inch Air’s new $1,100 starting price undercuts competitors like the ASUS Zenbook X31A-DH71 and Acer Aspire S7, but it puts Apple in an uncomfortable position. The MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) is the system you want to be using if you need to deliver real work away from your desk. The fact that it can return such a long battery life while still using a mainstream processor is astonishing. Make no mistake, this simple score shows that laptops haven't conceded the battery life prizes to the mobile OS tablets yet. The MacBook Air 13 is close, but not quite perfect, since it lacks a built in HDMI-out port and the slower-clocked processor returns slower multimedia performance on benchmark tests than rivals. Heart transplant. The new Apple MacBook Air 13 Mid 2014 is once again an evolution instead of a revolution, because there are not many differences compared to the last version. We focus on the inner values. A new Intel Core i5-4260U Haswell CPU clocked at 1.4 GHz in combination with 4 GB RAM and a large 256 GB SSD. Sounds appealing.

In 2013, when Apple reduced the price of the MacBook Pro with Retina display range, we stopped recommending the 13-inch MacBook Air on the basis that there was only £150 difference in price. As Apple has continued to drop prices we are still looking at just a £150 difference between the two ranges at the entry level. It's great to see Apple reducing prices across its MacBook ranges, but the lower prices of the MacBook Pro Retina range do have the effect of making the MacBook Air look less attractive in comparison. However, we still love the MacBook Air, which is lighter and thinner, although a fraction bigger than the MacBook Pro with Retina display. If it's the MacBook Air that you have your heart set on, you can't go wrong with it, but if you have a little more in your budget, then consider the MacBook Pro with Retina display because it's a really good deal in comparison.

We tried our best to find something to dislike about the new MacBook Air, but really, it’s hard to fault. The screen is still a stunner, it’s still the most premium-looking laptop around, and now it’s cheaper and a bit more powerful. The best just got better.

Make no bones about it: the MacBook Air is no longer the top dog in the thin-and-light laptop field. With the Yoga 2 Pro packing in a high-DPI display and a similar all-round specification for only 99p more, and no shortage of fine Windows 8 alternatives, the MacBook Air has some serious competition on its hands.

We were sort of expecting the new MacBook to be a letdown, after all very little has changed other than the price tag and the processor speed. Instead we’ve fallen in love with it all over again – it’s simply the best laptop we’ve ever seen. Admittedly the resolution is a bit old-hat, but right now we’d still rather have the extravagant battery life. Only time will tell if we’ll change our mind when the Retina version arrives…

The saving grace of the MacBook remains its outstanding battery life. We generally take manufacturer’s claims with a pinch of salt, but for routine tasks such as wordprocessing and occasional Web browsing the MacBook Air really does live up to Apple’s estimate of 12 hours of battery life. It may look a little old-fashioned, but the ability to get a full day’s work from a lightweight laptop such as this makes the MacBook Air an excellent choice for business travellers.

Many people will harp on about the dated display, but that £100 price cut will appeal to plenty of people who just want a lightweight laptop with good battery life. That should keep sales going for a few months yet, but this old dog needs to learn a few new tricks if it wants to keep its position as leader of the pack.

If you care about screen quality above all other considerations then probably not. The MacBook Air's screen isn't bad, but it isn't good either: it's just deeply average. This will be enough to dismiss the MacBook Air in some eyes, but this doesn't tell the whole story. That's because everything else about the MacBook Air remains outstanding. Its design is still unmatched and the battery life is out of this world considering the base 13-inch Macbook Air only costs £850 now. This also means it's exceedingly good value, so much so that anyone who is 'platform neutral' will find it hard to consider anything else.

What was once a luxury ultraportable has become a bargain. For a reasonable $999, the MacBook Air boasts best-in-class battery life, fast performance and an excellent keyboard and touchpad. Plus, OS X Mavericks is easier to use and less of a hassle than Windows 8 when it comes to security updates. However, the flash storage on this Air isn't as speedy as that on the last model.

As we anticipated Apple has reacted to the very minor price difference between the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the 2013 MacBook Air, by reducing the price by as much as £130. This means the whole MacBook Air line up is now under £1,000, which should serve to make it even more popular than it is currently. Unfortunately in some areas the 2014 Mac Air isn't quite as good as last year's model - the flash storage seems to be slower than it was in 2013. For this reason, if you can get a discounted 13in 2013 MacBook Air from the Apple refurb store, it is still be worth considering as an alternative to the newer 2014 model.

Featuring a better display, upgradable storage and an advanced Surface Pen digital stylus, the Surface Pro 3 is the winner of this vs review. Overall, we take our hats off to Microsoft for its Surface Pro 3. It really does have specs that rival the MacBook Air and portability that brings it closer to competing tablets. But when it actually comes to using the Surface Pro 3 as a laptop, it's not the most comfortable of activities. We find the MacBook Air wonderful to work on for long periods of time, and with that lengthy battery life it's more suitable for full-day use.

The 2014 11-inch MacBook Air aptly demonstrates the truth of the age-old aphorism, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." This is a niche device, suitable for Apple users that need both portability and power. While it’s tempting to compare it to other Ultrabooks, it actually has a lot in common with the Surface Pro 2, which has very similar specs and is built for a very specific type of Windows user. For the platform agnostic looking for thin, light, and powerful, the MacBook Air is certainly worth considering. Its “acceptable” display and other drawbacks make it tough to outright recommend over any and all competition.

The upgrades made to the MacBook Air this year are minor, meaning that those looking for an overhaul will be disappointed. The 2015 MacBook Air is unexciting and not as fashionable as it once was, but its excellent battery life, decent performance and good selection of ports make it worthy of your consideration for another year. Though it doesn’t quite pack the power of a Retina MacBook Pro, Intel’s latest processor and faster storage make it a genuinely nippy machine that handles day-to-day tasks with ease. After some extensive testing, we found the MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015) to be little different overall to the 2014 model. The Thunderbolt 2 update will prove useful for connecting to high-resolution UHD displays, and a few percent of added processor power is never unwelcome. It has the looks, a solid design, enough ports, and a battery life that we wish other machines in its class neared, and now it has a system that stay cool under pressure.

To be fair, the battery life of the MacBook Air is still hard to beat, and a more mass-market price tag would probably see the darn thing flying off the shelves again. But the bottom line is that it’s now an entry-level laptop with a mid-range price tag. Apple justifies its premium prices by delivering premium design, and on that score the MacBook Air, sadly, just doesn’t cut it anymore, but at least it has a choice of USB and Thunderbolt interfacing as standard.

Unchanged evergreen. Apple refreshes its MacBook Air-series with current Broadwell processors. This does improve the performance noticeably, but something is missing – innovation.

Still a great option for people in need of a decent battery and a couple of standard sized USB ports, the 11 inch MacBook Air is no longer the best ultra-light out there, and as such, it’s difficult to call this model out as something to buy. While the Air design and build are still second to none, the price of this computer isn’t far off where 13 inch machines normally sit, and you don’t even get a decent screen or a memory card slot to work with.

Yet, despite Apple’s attempts to hobble the Air’s appeal with a frugal smattering of upgrades, and growing pressure from a cast of able contenders, the 11in MacBook Air still delivers almost everything you could ask from an ultraportable. A dramatic facelift (or early retirement) is almost certainly due in the not-too-distant future – but for now, the 11in MacBook Air serves as a welcome reminder of what made Apple’s ultraportable so great in the first place.

As with the MacBook Air 13in, the 11-inch 2015 MacBook Air is getting on a bit. Despite some important, useful updates, certain elements of the design and the screen hardware just aren’t up there with the best anymore. The Air 11 is cast in a particularly poor light arriving just before the 12in MacBook. For the tech nut, it may not be enough anymore.

Available at the same price as last year, the new 11-inch MacBook Air has the same super-fast storage as before, and around 10 percent increase in processor performance. Gaming performance was always borderline, and now we find it no better and even fractionally slower. But overall battery runtime increased by almost a third in our tests, a very useful upgrade on the already very decent 10 hour-plus battery life of the previous generation.

For now it’s clear that the MacBook Air offers the better deal in terms of specs, presuming that you are looking for a light laptop – if weight isn’t an issue then there are even better options in the MacBook Pro range.

There's life in the old dog yet. It might be hard to believe, but Apple's MacBook Air 13 (unibody aluminum design, 1.35 kg/~3 lb, 17 mm/~0.7 in, 13.3-inch, 1440 x 900) has just turned 7 years old. Once at the very forefront of the vanguard of Ultrabooks, it has now turned into a beloved grandpa.

The 2017 upgrades to the MacBook Air are minor, so if you're looking for Apple to completely overhaul this device you may be a little disappointed. While the rest of the recipe is great, we're still underwhelmed by the screen and it's an area that could definitely do with a bit of attention.

The MacBook Air may be going gray (well, silver) as it ages, but we still love its long battery life, solid performance and safety-first MagSafe 2 power port. You also don't have to worry about schlepping any dongles to plug in peripherals. Two downsides, however, are that its display is stuck in the past decade, and it's up to a pound heavier than competitors.

The 13-inch MacBook Air is Apple’s entry-level laptop, starting at £949 (US$999). It might lack the super-sharp Retina screen of the Macbook and MacBook Pro models but its display and performance is fine for most everyday uses. It boasts enough USB ports and other slots to make it more useful out of the box than the more limited, USB-C-only 12-inch MacBook or Pro. And its Wi-Fi is the same high standard as even the top-of-the-range MacBook Pro. If you need raw power go for the Pro. If you need the smallest Mac laptop there is, look at the 12-inch MacBook. But, all in all, despite it not changing much year after year we still love the MacBook Air for its design, price, size and features.

The MacBook Air remains a fine piece of computing hardware, and there's a reason or ten that it has stuck around as long as it has. But unless you're dead-set on sticking to macOS, better options are available in this price range. And if you are a Mac die-hard and looking for an extremely light laptop, don't dismiss the impressive 2-pound Apple MacBook (2017)$1,299.00 at Apple Store. If anything, that current-generation MacBook, as well as the latest 13-inch MacBook Pros, feel more solid and well-built than the MacBook Air. If you aren't put off by their $300-higher starting prices, they may be worth paying more for, if you can get used to the keyboards and having only USB Type-C at your fingertips.

Apple:
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Den integrerade grafikkretsen i Intels Sandy Bridge-processorer (Core ix-2xxx).
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Den integrerade grafikkretsen i Intels Ivy Bridge-processorer.
