If you’re someone who’s already dropped a lot of money on an M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro, then you do not need to upgrade to this 2023 version. However, if you have an older machine that’s beginning to feel a little old, or fancy the switch to Apple’s MacOS, then this MacBook Pro 14-inch (2023) is a brilliant laptop that you shouldn’t ignore. The various price rises (prices have stayed in the States, but risen in regions like the UK) are tough to take, especially when the costs for additional memory and storage are so high. This machine, as a result, is for a very specific type of customer – for once, the Pro moniker isn’t simply a marketing term like it is with the AirPods Pro or iPhone 14 Pro. For many, the MacBook Air M2 is more than enough laptop for a lot less money, and a 15-inch model may be on the way too.

So the big question is, is the 2023 14" MacBook Pro for you? First and foremost, that depends on whether you need or want macOS or Windows. The only segment we'd recommend completely shy away from this machine is PC gamers who want to play on a laptop, as this is just not a real option here. MetalFX Upscaling is a nice nod towards the modern trend of hardware-assisted image enhancement like FSR and DLSS, but only Resident Evil Village makes use of it. Dev studios just have not flocked to the Mac, despite the fact that all of the machines Apple makes today have more graphics horsepower than any x86 PC with integrated graphics alone. And at this point, that doesn't look likely to change. If you want a productivity machine and play games on a separate desktop, though, the MacBook shines.

I have used the MacBook Pro 14 extensively and it’s flawless, the kind of product that will help you do your work and not be a hassle. Sure, we all want more. It could have used an OLED screen. Or it could have been sharper looking. Or this. And that. But this is not even nitpicking. The MacBook Pro 14 is so good at what it does and what all it offers that I have no hesitation to say this is the best laptop you can buy whether your work involves coding and compiling, editing or watching pre-released videos or working on thousands of professional photos all in one week. This also makes the Pro 14 and the Pro 16 the best laptops for almost everyone except those who want the compactness of a 13-inch machine. The key question, however, is the price you are willing to pay. I feel people, who make serious money from the work they do on their laptop, will see a lot of value in something like the Pro 14 and the Pro 16. The speed and sorted manners of the Pro 14 mean that these machines will save a lot of time and for some users saved time could equal to more money. So yes, it is worth Rs 199,900 if you can make full use of it. However, if you are a college student, or someone who requires a new laptop for office work with Office 365 and Chrome browser, you will do fine with a more basic MacBook Air or the MacBook 13 with regular M2 chipset.

If you’ve already invested in a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro processor, there’s no discernible gain for you in buying the new model. For everyone else, it’s just a matter of emptying your piggy bank. At this price point, you can’t buy a better laptop right now. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro is also available in more expensive versions, such as the M2 Pro with 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores, and the M2 Max processor also with 12 CPU cores, but with a 30-core GPU, which can even be upgraded to a full 38 cores when you buy the machine, but then you also need to bring the really, really big wallet. The new M2 Pro edition of the MacBook Pro offers towering performance, improved wireless connectivity, and the same great display we know from its predecessor. The only reason the 14-inch Macbook Pro with M2 Pro processor doesn’t get our top marks is that we’d have liked Apple to upgrade the built-in webcam. By 2023, we expect both FaceID and the ‘In Focus’ feature from a laptop costing more than €2,000.

Price is the only obstacle. The base model we tested starts at $2,000, but increasing the amount of RAM, storage space, and processing power easily puts the price around $3,000. That’s a lot and, depending on your needs, the MacBook Pro 14 might feel too expensive. But if you’re willing to pay up or tend to hang on to a laptop for as long as it’s still working, it’s hard to go wrong with the MacBook Pro 14 as it outclasses much of its Windows competition.

The answer to this really comes down to two things; power and budget. This machine, even the base model, will handle the most complex of tasks with relative ease. So if you require a lot of power from a compact laptop, a screen that is going to allow you to see your creative work in all its glory, will last all day and is super-portable, you'd be hard pushed to find a better option than the 14-inch MacBook Pro. But I want to be clear that this is an immense amount of power, and more than most would ever need from a laptop. I guess the other consideration is personal style. I work on the go a lot, work in creative software regularly, which my M1 MacBook Air handles with ease. But, having experienced this new model, if budget wasn't an issue, I would choose the new 14-inch MacBook Pro every time. And that's because I personally really appreciate its overall design and the added connectivity it offers.

If you have the budget, we have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it, but there is also an argument for considering the MacBook Pro (M1 Pro/Max) models, which are still fantastic machines two years on and may be cheaper now if you can get hold of them. In the same breath, it's likely the same will be said for these M2 Pro/Max models two years down the road so they would be a solid investment. Whether you should upgrade from the M1 Pro/Max models really does depend on what you do with your laptop and whether you can justify the price for the performance gains, but for those on older MacBooks, this a dream machine that will deliver noticeable performance improvements instantly.

The budget-conscious should consider the M2 MacBook Air instead, it has more than enough performance for most people. The display isn’t as nice but it counters by being a lot more portable and affordable. The MacBook Air is the Mac notebook for everyone. And as for owners of the older M1-based MacBook Pros, I see little need to upgrade unless you really need the improved connectivity (the old models couldn’t output to an 8K screen), work with really large files and need a system with 96GB of memory, or could really use the additional multi-core performance. So what then is a MacBook Pro? It is as the title of this review suggests, the computing equivalent of a Rolls Royce. Vast amounts of power, beautifully built, it is way more notebook than most of its buyers would ever need. If you do not absolutely have to use a Windows machine and have deep enough wallets, this is the best ultraportable notebook you can buy today.

Then there’s the Dell XPS 15 that offers an Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce 4050 with a 15.6-inch, 3.5K OLED display, also priced at RM10,999. Perhaps what’s most telling is that while watching an episode of Loki, I didn’t feel that the speakers were lacking at all.

The Magic Keyboard may not have the best key travel but it’s comfortable for long hours of typing. The big touchpad is the real deal here, it’s one of the best trackpads that we have tested up to date. We intentionally bought the device’s base version with a 512GB SSD and just 8GB of unified memory. The latter is enough for normal work but if you open more than 12 websites at the same time, the memory will be filled and the swap file on the SSD will start to grow in size. That’s why, the 16GB version is more future-proof but you have to pay an extra $200 for it and a whopping $400 for the 24GB amount. Speaking of which, both memory and SSD are soldered so choose your configuration wisely before buying. At least you can connect an external HDD or SSD if you are running out of storage.

So, how does the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 SoC stack up? It boasts a pretty sizeable sharp, and vibrant display, one of the best webcams in the market, an impressive setup of speakers, and all the essential ports you may need as a professional. Moreover, not only does it offer more performance than most people will ever be able to extract out of it, but it also impresses with an outstanding 22 hours of battery life. Unless you have a very specific use case — like working on AI applications, or rendering complex CAD files, or creating complex animations — the M3 is enough. However, if your work involves a lot of 3D animations, rendering complex engineering and designing models, and working on AI models, you will be better off with the M3 Pro or M3 Max variants.

The long-rumored 15-inch MacBook Air arrived months ago, and the company surprised us by delivering two MacBook Pro revisions in less than 12 months. While I appreciated the speed bump that the M2 Pro models brought, the new M3-equipped MacBook Pro 14- and 16-inch are a clearer sign of where Apple is headed. The company has killed off the long-suffering 13-inch MacBook Pro, which was cursed with a Touch Bar and an aging design. Now, its Pro machines are truly geared towards professionals, while the Air models are meant for everyone else.

The design, while a bit staid, is still beautiful, the display is bright and colorful, even the speakers and keyboard are great. In fact, the MacBook Pro 14 has only gotten better with the addition of Apple’s new M3 chip, which delivers better overall and gaming performance than its predecessor with even longer battery life. And while consumers faithful to the discontinued MacBook Pro 13 are going to gnash their teeth about having to fork out an additional $300 for the $1,599 MacBook Pro. It’s simply the best all-round MacBook Pro on the market that can do everything well without breaking the bank hands down.

I just wish you got more for the starting price — $1,599 is too much for 8GB of RAM, and just because you can’t use two external displays with an M3 chip doesn’t mean you couldn’t make the most out of three Thunderbolt ports. It’s hard to tell who Apple imagines using this entry-level MacBook Pro. It seems to have a clearer idea of the serious Pros and the hordes of casual users. But the line between an Air and an entry-level Pro is blurrier than ever. I consider myself smack dab in the heavy Air user / light Pro user category. I spent a lot of time hopping between them while writing this review, running numbers while sifting through various configurations. It just turned me into the confused math lady meme. Gripes aside, I’ve been very happy using this as my daily driver for the past week.

For well over 15 years, I’ve believed in the Mac. I know, I sound like the first scene in The Godfather, but hear me out.. Bought my first MacBook Pro in 2009 when I decided to do YouTube seriously. Upgraded in 2012 when the Retina Display was just irresistible. That particular model was so good, that it helped me edit nearly 1800 videos over the next five years. That said, I’ll admit I did fully commit to a switch after Microsoft reached out to get me to try a Dell that was double the price, along with Premiere Pro, but that didn’t last. Even with so much horse power, and all the granularity in the Adobe Creative Suite, I showed them that I could edit the same video in half the time on a five-year-old Mac with Final Cut Pro.

Now, obviously, I only have access to performance numbers for the M3 Max. And in the unit I’m seeing, performance is pretty killer. If you’re for that top-end model, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The M3 Pro and M3 configurations, however, are a different story. We already know for sure that the M3 Pro has both reduced memory bandwidth and fewer performance cores than the M2 Pro. That certainly doesn’t sound good. But until performance is tested firsthand though, we won’t know for sure how those will affect overall performance. All I know is that the M3 Max model is a huge jump over the M2 Max in terms of GPU performance. That won’t make it a must-buy for everyone coming from earlier models (especially if you can get the M2 Max for cheap), but I’m happy to see Apple continue to push the envelope on these high-end machines.

Funny enough, my advice today echoes what I said last year: Don't buy the cheapest model. Beyond that, it's hard to go wrong. The M3 chips are incredibly efficient and powerful. And Apple's MacBook Pro design remains as elegant as ever. Just try to save up for at least 16GB of RAM.

The MacBook Pro M3 Pro proves to be a good work tool for everyday tasks. It’s noticeably faster than the MacBook Pro M3–the extra money you must pay to upgrade from the M3 to the M3 Pro is well spent money. The MacBook Pro M3 isn’t a bad laptop–it’s Apple’s pricing that is out whack. As a replacement for a MacBook Pro from the Intel era, or a M1 MacBook Air or a 13-inch MacBook Pro, the lower-end M3 Pro it is a great step forward. De här grafikkorten bör klara av alla nuvarande spel med acceptabel bildfrekvens, men inte nödvändigtvis med höga inställningar. Särskilt krävande spel kanske bara fungerar med låga inställningar. Till skillnad från prestandakorten hittar man däremot de här grafikkorten i bärbara datorer av lite mindre format med bättre batteritid.
