Som namnet tydligt beskriver är det här en av få telefoner på marknaden idag som har skärm med böjda kanter. Det var trendigt när möjligheten kom, men är något som de flesta tillverkare idag allt mer går ifrån, till förmån för helt platta skärmar. Till stor del är kurvade skärmkanter en vattendelare, vissa gillar det, andra inte och i det här fallet gör det att en tunn och lätt telefon känns ännu tunnare. Just känslor och hur telefonen upplevs i handen har Motorola satsat extra på. Mitt testexemplar är i ett lila gummiaktigt material som kallas vegansk läder men inte känns så speciellt. Telefonen släpps dock även i en exklusiv, handgjord pärlfinnish. Systermodellen Ultra kommer även med träbaksida där känsla och doft ska finnas där som faktorer när du tar på eller gnuggar baksidan.

Speaking of the Galaxy S23 FE, it is probably the best competition to the Edge 50 Pro, with a chipset that is even more capable (despite being two generations old by now), also rocking a triple camera system at the back, and the ability to shoot at 4K 60fps. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 inside the Motorola, however, prevails in many gaming-related cases. Also, there’s the 125W wired and 50W wireless charging with the Edge 50 Pro vs the 25/15W on the Galaxy.

Even with the remarkably-specced Ultra, the Edge 50 Pro still manages to offer a very capable camera setup for stills - a champion at light gathering of a main camera is joined by a solid telephoto in a segment where dedicated zoom cameras are rare and an ultrawide that's got autofocus and puts it to good use. And then it tops it all off with some excellent selfies for good measure. Motorola says it's big on experiences and transcending the specs wars, which is convenient when the chipset isn't winning any. But the newly renamed Hello UI is a sizable chunk of the experience with an Edge 50 Pro and it's a nice blend of the visual simplicity of 'stock' Android and the personality and functionality that Motorola has built and continued to develop on top of it. All things considered, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro may just be worth a recommendation - with a medium-sized asterisk about regional pricing and market context.

I’m a fan of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s sleek styling, eye-catching colour options, and how quickly it can gulp down power when plugged into a mains socket. But I don’t think it’s the flagship-baiter that the previous generation could claim to be. That’s not to say it’s lacking performance, or has particularly meagre battery life – more that rivals have superior silicon and larger capacity cells for the same sort of cash. The Pantone partnership hasn’t delivered cameras that significantly outsnap the competition, either. Image quality is decent rather than spectacular, and the app is particularly sluggish. Phone photographers only need to spend a little more to get a better shooting experience. If you’re sold on the looks, there’s nothing here I’d consider a dealbreaker – though the abundance of well-rounded rivals at the £599/€699 mark means it doesn’t quite earn that Pro moniker. I fully expect it’ll prove more successful in other territories, where pricing is much keener.

I’m a fan of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s sleek styling, eye-catching colour options, and how quickly it can gulp down power when plugged into a mains socket. But I don’t think it’s the flagship-baiter that the previous generation could claim to be. That’s not to say it’s lacking performance, or has particularly meagre battery life – more that rivals have superior silicon and larger capacity cells for the same sort of cash. The Pantone partnership hasn’t delivered cameras that significantly outsnap the competition, either. Image quality is decent rather than spectacular, and the app is particularly sluggish. Phone photographers only need to spend a little more to get a better shooting experience. If you’re sold on the looks, there’s nothing here I’d consider a dealbreaker – though the abundance of well-rounded rivals at the £599/€699 mark means it doesn’t quite earn that Pro moniker. I fully expect it’ll prove more successful in other territories, where pricing is much keener.

Det är vid en första anblick mest formgivning och material som gör Edge 50 Ultra unik. Motorola satsar mycket på livsstil och upplevelse framför tekniken i sig. Det märker vi här, för mitt testexemplar har en baksida av träfiber och tidigare när jag testat Motorolas telefoner har jag vant mig vid doften de lägger till i sina paket, första gången du öppnar telefonens kartong efter köpet. Tidigare har jag uppskattat det. Här krockar det dock, för när jag tar upp Edge 50 Ultra förväntar jag mig doft av trä, inte att träbaksidan ska lukta starkt av söt parfym. När den värsta parfymdoften lagt sig får jag i alla fall en mer genuin känsla av trä. Någon trädoft framträder dock aldrig. Strukturen och ränderna i materialet är unikt för varje telefon, så ingen är exakt den andra lik och ytan känns matt och lätt gummiliknande.

80% Test: Motorola Edge 50 Ultra – Väcker känslor

Det är vid en första anblick mest formgivning och material som gör Edge 50 Ultra unik. Motorola satsar mycket på livsstil och upplevelse framför tekniken i sig. Det märker vi här, för mitt testexemplar har en baksida av träfiber och tidigare när jag testat Motorolas telefoner har jag vant mig vid doften de lägger till i sina paket, första gången du öppnar telefonens kartong efter köpet. Tidigare har jag uppskattat det. Här krockar det dock, för när jag tar upp Edge 50 Ultra förväntar jag mig doft av trä, inte att träbaksidan ska lukta starkt av söt parfym. När den värsta parfymdoften lagt sig får jag i alla fall en mer genuin känsla av trä. Någon trädoft framträder dock aldrig. Strukturen och ränderna i materialet är unikt för varje telefon, så ingen är exakt den andra lik och ytan känns matt och lätt gummiliknande.

Granted yes there are some small bug bites being the camera and pictures taken in low light, but also not having expandable memory to lack of a 3.5mm audio – which for me isn’t a make or break issue but for some there could be alongside missing wireless charging which again isn’t a make or break issue for me, The Edge 50 Fusion does offer some pretty great specs for a relatively great price. I do like that Motorola are pushing the bounds a bit more with their devices and absolutely love the QR transfer from your old device to your new device and I hope this makes its way to many other devices because it’s just brilliant. Certainly I would say the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is worthy of consideration if you’re in the market for a new device that won’t break the bank.

Helped by its good hardware, the device was capable of providing accurate colors in natural mode and a peak brightness at 1,612 nits, which is quite good for the segment. Despite those performance highlights, some software tuning issues were evident in all aspects of our protocol. In readability, the device lacks a high brightness mode, which affects the screen’s readability in a bright environment, particularly the darkest shades. Our testers saw no increase in the device’s gamma dynamic range that would have enhanced the dark shades. The Motorola Edge 50 Neo’s natural colors were accurate and well-rendered on the display.

The 50 Neo’s strength lies in its low light and portrait capabilities, which I was glad to find, are much better than the 40 Neo’s. However, while the 50 Neo is an improvement on the 40 Neo, it still has some of the same drawbacks. The ultrawide camera is still best avoided. Colour oversaturation and sharpness being overdone to the point where images look sort of fake was still a recurring problem. That said, the 50 Neo is still a pretty good choice, and I mostly enjoyed using it.

Motorola's Edge lineup has a strong presence in key markets around the world and offering a wide variety of phones with diverse feature sets is a big part of the reason why. This year's Edge 50 lineup is quite numerous, but the Neo seems like it has every chance of becoming the star of the family. It's the most compact, the second most affordable and yet it doesn't sacrifice virtually anything in terms of camera capabilities or screen quality. The IP68 certification and wireless charging are also still here, leaving the chipset as the only potential weak point. But without running our full sets of tests, it's too early to tell if the Neo and the vanilla are worth recommending. Still, we remain very optimistic about their prospects as we part ways and we hope to be able to share more about them in the coming weeks.

Motorola:

Det här är mindre avancerade grafikkort för användare som ändå vill kunna spela spel. Nya spel bör vara spelbara, men ofta bara med låga detaljinställningar och låg upplösning. Eftersom moderna grafikkort i den här klassen har låg strömförbrukning kan även batteritiden vara bra.

Qualcomm Adreno 720: Grafikchip för smartphones och surfplattor, integrerat i Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 SoC. Enligt Qualcomm 2x snabbare än den gamla Adreno 644 i Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

Qualcomm Adreno 735: Grafikchip för smartphones och surfplattor, integrerat i Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC.

En del nyare spel kan spelas med de här grafikkorten, men bara om de är mindre krävande. De har ändå tillräcklig kapacitet för kontorsbruk och film (möjligen högupplöst). Är grafikkretsen dessutom integrerad kan batteritiden vara utmärkt.

Qualcomm Adreno 710:

Qualcomm Adreno 644: Grafikchip för smartphones och surfplattor som är integrerat i Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm hävdar att det är 20% snabbare än den tidigare generationen.

ARM Mali-G615 MP2: Mellanklassgrafikchip för smartphones med 2 av 6 möjliga kärnor. Baserat på den fjärde generationen av Valhall-arkitekturen. Erbjuder skuggning med variabel hastighet.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:

SD 7 Gen 3: Mellanklass-SoC med 8 kryokärnor (1x ARM Cortex-X2 2,91 GHz prime core, 3x ARM Cortex A710 2,49 GHz performance cluster, 4x ARM Cortex A510 med 1,8 efficiency cluster) och ett X62 5G-modem (upp till 4400 Mbps nedladdning). Chipet tillverkas i den moderna 4nm-processen hos TSMC.

SD 8s Gen 3: High-end SoC (System on a Chip) för smartphones som introducerades 2024. Det integrerar bland annat en snabb Cortex-X4 "Prime Core" med upp till 3 GHz och ytterligare 4 snabba Cortex-A720 2,8 GHz-kärnor. För att spara ström installerades också ytterligare 3 ARM Cortex-A520-kärnor med 2,3 GHz. Ett 5G-modem, WiFi 7 och en betydligt snabbare AI-motor är integrerade.

SD 7s Gen 2: Mellanklass-SoC med 8 Kryo-kärnor (4x ARM Cortex-A78 2,4 GHz performance cluster, 4x ARM Cortex A55 1,95 GHz efficiency cluster) och ett 5G-modem (upp till 2900 Mbps nedladdning). Chipet tillverkas med hjälp av den moderna 4nm-processen.

SD 7 Gen 1: Snabb ARM SoC i mellanklassen med 8 CPU Kryo-kärnor (fyra snabba ARM Cortex-A710-kärnor på upp till 2,4 GHz, tre ytterligare A78 på upp till 2,2. GHz och fyra små ARM Cortex-A55-kärnor på upp till 1,9 GHz) och ett integrerat X53 5G-modem (upp till 3300 Mbps nedladdning). SoC:n tillverkas i den moderna 5 nm-processen.

Mediatek :

Dimensity 7300: Dimensity 7300 är en mellanklassprocessor med ett integrerat 5G-modem. CPU-delen integrerar fyra ARM Cortex-A78-kärnor med upp till 2,5 GHz och fyra Cortex-A55 power-kärnor med upp till 2 GHz. SoC:n är tillverkad med den moderna 4nm-processen.
