Efter några förseningar börjar nu AMD:s avancerade Ryzen 7 4800U äntligen nå butikerna. Resultaten är så tokiga för en laptop på 14 tum att det hade varit svårt att rekommendera en Intel-motsvarighet även om den haft samma pris.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Stjärnan i Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 är onekligen dess Ryzen 7 4800U APU. Bortsett från några väldigt jämna enkeltrådade tester finns det inget prestandatest eller spel där den nya AMD-processorn inte lyckas bättre än de bästa processorerna från Intels Iris Plus G7- eller Comet Lake U-serier. Och vi pratar inte bara om små marginaler; den multitrådade CPU- och grafikprestandan kan vara 40 till 50 procent snabbare än på en Core i7-10710U respektive en Core i7-1065G7, samtidigt som Ryzen 7 4800U bara drar några extra Watt. Man får det bästa av två världar — GPU-prestandan från en 10 nm Ice Lake och den flertrådade prestandan från en 14 nm Comet Lake U — i ett snabbare och mer energieffektivt 7 nm-paket med 8 kärnor.

Utmaningen för AMD är nu att lyckas erbjuda konsekvent processorprestanda mellan flera olika modeller och tillverkare. Yoga Slim 7 är tänkt att visa upp Ryzen 7 4800U i sin bästa form, vilket innebär att framtida bärbara datorer kan tänkas köra samma processor med lägre klockfrekvenser. Det ska bli intressant att se hur brett prestandagapet kommer vara mellan olika modeller utrustade med samma Ryzen 7 4800U APU, särskilt eftersom vi redan uppmätt stora prestandaskillnader mellan 10:e generationens Ice Lake-system. Med andra ord vill vi slippa se en Ryzen 7 4800U-laptop som är 40 till 50 procent långsammare än vår Yoga Slim 7, vilket särskilt gäller när den utsätts för ihållande belastning.

När det kommer till Lenovos faktiska laptop är den i princip en förstorad IdeaPad S940. Vi misstänker att den inte kunde ha samma storlek för att Lenovo behövde den extra volymen och därmed också kylpotentialen för att fullt ut kunna utnyttja den åttakärniga 25 W-processorn. Oavsett så innebär detta att Yoga Slim 7 kommer vara aningen tyngre än de flesta andra subnotebook-modeller på 14 tum.

Chassit har dessutom några brister och märkligheter. Ett exempel är att webbkameran saknar ett skyddsöverdrag, vilket förvirrar oss eftersom den billigare IdeaPad S340 har ett. Skärmen är heller inte lika ljusstark som på IdeaPad S940, för att inte tala om jämfört med många andra Ultrabook-flaggskepp. Men vi kan däremot uppskatta att den har dubbla lagringsplatser och stöd för FreeSync, något andra subnotebooks sällan erbjuder.
