Acer Aspire 5 A514 utmärker sig inte i någon särskild kategori, vilket är okej med tanke på att det är en billig laptop. Men det betyder inte att den kan ligga efter på vissa viktiga områden. Den som väljer en laptop på 14 tum istället för en på 15.6 tum uppskattar troligen den mindre formfaktorns mobilitet. Acers modell har tjockare infattning och högre vikt, vilket gör den till ett sämre alternativ jämfört med lättare motsvarigheter som Asus VivoBook eller Walmart Motile. Acers större dimensioner hade varit okej om de inneburit någon fördel som ett fastare chassi eller några extra funktioner, men något sådant finns inte.

Vi träffade också på en bugg rörande processorns prestanda som ytterligare kastar skugga över systemet. Som tur är kommer den inte påverka prestandan vid vardagsbruk eftersom Aspire 5 inte är tänkt för krävande arbete, men det är ändå en oönskad effekt. Även om vi inte tar buggen i beaktande så är den rena CPU-prestandan lägre än på de flesta andra modeller som har samma Core i5 10210U-processor.

Systemet har en del höjdpunkter som är värda att nämna. Skärmen är välkalibrerad redan vid leverans och den har två interna lagringsplatser istället för en. Fläkten är nästan alltid tyst vid låg eller låg- till medelbelastning och batteritiden är respektabel för den här kategorin. Men trots det har Aspire 5 A514 hamnat efter jämfört med nyare och likvärdigt prissatta subnotebook-modeller från konkurrerande tillverkare.

Skärmen må vara trevlig för det här priset, men nästan allt annat med Aspire 5 A514 känns utdaterat. Det kanske är dags för Acer att ta fram en ny chassidesign för att bättre kunna konkurrera på marknaden för 14-tumsmaskiner.
