GU501GM försöker ta det bästa från Zephyrus M till en lägre prisklass. För det mesta lyckas den. Samma smidiga och lyxiga chassi (bortsett från den eleganta gångjärnsmekanismen på bottenpanelen) klarar sig genom övergången, precis som tangentbordet, högtalarna och den toppklassade Core i7-8750H.
Tyvärr visar sig denna CPU vara en blandad kompott. Den ökade prestandan uppskattas enormt i dom flesta uppgifter, även om processorn inte verkar kunna hålla ut vid beräknings-stress. Fläktarna är ytterligare ett irritationsmoment; deras höga frekvens gnisslar i öronen och kommer bli händelsernas centrum i ett välfyllt rum eller på ett café. På plus-sidan så finns det förmildrande omständigheter för dessa problem. Även om systemet kraschar vid CPU-stress så klarar den av all annan arbetsbörda bra. Dom olika lägena för fläkten hjälper till att kontrollera fläktens ljudnivå på bekostnad av mer värme och lägre prestanda.
När allt är sagt så finns det inte mycket att ogilla med GU501GM, men med tanke på priset finns det inte mycket anledning utöver det estetiska att köpa den. Med ett rekommenderat pris på ca 17.000 kronor så är GU501GM helt enkelt för dyr för att vara rimlig; det finns andra snyggt konstruerade enheter med liknande specifikationer för mindre pengar (Asus egna Strix-serie är ett exempel). För samma pris eller en aning mer kan man uppgradera till kraftigare hårdvara och ett totalt sett bättre paket, likt vad som erbjuds av Gigabytes Aero 15x eller MSI GS65 Stealth Thin. Till och med för det aktuella priset på 13.000 kronor är det svårt att rekommendera GU501GM över andra liknande maskiner.
GU501GM är helt enkelt en lyxartikel. Även om höljet är vackert och maskinen är en kompetent mittenskikts-laptop för spel så har den ett för högt pris. Bara om man sätter design över alla andra faktorer bör man överväga att köpa GU501GM; och till och med då finns det bättre alternativ där ute.
