Latitude 5290 2-i-1 är på många sätt Surface Pro för företagsvärlden. Allt från dess nedtonade utseende, relativt praktiska servicemöjligheter, robusta säkerhetsalternativ, tysta drift och portutbud som ligger över genomsnittet gör att den passar perfekt ihop med vanliga kontorsbehov. Utöver allt det får vi fördelen av en extremt robust konstruktion i magnesiumlegering, en sällsynt ljusstark och levande skärm, väldigt snabb CPU-prestanda och ett bra tangentbord/styrplatta (på det separat sålda men ändå nödvändiga Travel Keyboard-tillbehöret för ca 1 300 kronor). Tillslut så tillfredställer Dell Active Pen, som finns som tillval för ca 500 kronor, behoven för en unik undergrupp av användare som behöver exakt Wacom-tryckkänslig aktiv stylus-inmatning.
Latitude 5290 2-i-1 är på många sätt företagsvärldens motsvarighet till Surface Pro; dess försiktiga kombination av lyx i konsumentklass och medvetenhet i företagsklass kombineras till en unik omvandlingsbar som möter ett antal väldigt specifika behov.
Men det finns inga perfekta enheter, och Latitude 5290 kommer med sin andel noterbara kompromisser. Den största av dom är batteritiden, där Latitude hamnar en bra bit efter en del moderna konkurrenter som använder Kaby Lake-baserade SoC:ar. Den tyngs också ner av höga drifttemperaturer vid belastning (både på ytan och internt), även om värmen till viss del har fördelats bort från enhetens kanter (där händer vanligtvis vilar). Den grundläggande garantin är alldeles för kort för en enhet med en så betydande prislapp. Avsaknaden av Thunderbolt kommer troligen irritera användare som önskar mångsidiga dockningslösningar. Och tillslut, för att återvända till den betydande prislappen vi nyss nämnde: den är dyr, ca 16 000 kronor för dagens konfiguration (som dock, för att vara rättvis, åtminstone inkluderar Travel Keyboard-överdraget och den Active Pen.
Dom främsta konkurrenterna är fortfarande förra årets Latitude 5285 (som åtminstone klarar av mycket längre batteritid än 5290), Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 (som totalt sett är väldigt bra men som är omöjlig att uppgradera och underhålla från ett hårdvaruperspektiv), HP Elite x2 1012 G2 (som är en väldigt välavrundad enhet men som är betydligt svårare att underhålla) och Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2 (som är en bra kandidat men som hålls tillbaka av den passiva kylningens begränsningar och andra irritationsmoment såsom PWM). Alla dessa enheter har sina unika uppsättningar av styrkor och svagheter, så innan du bestämmer dig för en omvandlingsbar företagsmodell rekommenderar vi starkt att du tar en titt på allihop. Men om löstagbar 2-i-1-funktionalitet (och kanske tryckkänslig penn-inmatning) är ett absolut måste så finns det få enheter som totat sett lyckas med så stark prestanda som Latitude 5290.
