Dell XPS 13 är fortfarande en utmärkt subnotebook och som sådan förtjänar den att åter synas i vår Topp 10-lista. Batteritid på 11.5 timmar, en skärm med 90% sRGB-täckning och hyfsad ljusstyrka, robust aluminiumhölje, tyst fläktsystem, dugligt ljud med tanke på storleken, massor av portar och enkelt underhåll - alla dessa attribut bidrar till att göra detta till en väldigt åtråvärd 13-tums laptop.

Den viktigaste frågan vi ställde oss i recensionens början: är dess Kaby Lake R i5 CPU tillräcklig eller är uppgraderingen till en i7 värd pengarna?

I vårt tycke är denna SoC som ligger längre ner på skalan tillräcklig för dom flesta användare - om inte syftet är att i huvudsak köra parallelliserade applikationer. Både i5- och i7-processorn stryper sin hastighet när den utsätts för längre belastning och prestandan sjunker med 8% respektive 9%. Inte vid något tillfälle av vårt test nådde kärnan sina teoretiska maximala Turbo-hastigheter på 3.4 respektive 4.0 Ghz. Skillnaden i CPU-prestanda mellan i5- och i7-versionerna av XPS 13 är verkligen väldigt små och sträcker sig från +19% som bäst till +7% som värst (enkel- mot multi-trådade tester). i7-modellen lägger sig något längre fram när det kommer till systemprestanda (+8%).

Båda versionerna av XPS 13 presterar bättre än andra subnotebooks såsom HP Envy 13-ad006ng eller Apple MacBook Pro 13 endast med kraften i sina CPU:er - Kaby Lake R med 8 trådar. i7-modellen har, till exempel, ett prestanda-plus på 70% (R15 Multi, Kaby i7 mot Kaby R i7). Den nya fyrkärniga i5-modellen är upp till 75% snabbare än den äldre dual-kärnade 7200U (R15 Multi).
