XPS 15 reducerar inte bara CPU-frekvensen till 1,6 GHz under batteridrift, utan beter sig också allmänt trögt, vilket säkert inte imponerar på krävande användare. Det är irriterande när systemet inte märker att du satt i sladden efter ett antal tester och att den därför ska köras i 2,8 GHz.
Den matta Full-HD-panelen levererar bra resultat vad gäller ljusstyrka och kontrast. En sRGB-täckning på nästan 100% är också en positiv aspekt. Tyvärr är den inte ordentligt kalibrerad från fabrik, något som vara problematiskt för professionella användare.
Batteritiden kan nå nio timmar – men bara på tomgång och med den lägsta ljusstyrkan, vilket inte är helt tillfredsställande. Under Wi-Fi-surf håller sig datorn vid liv i ca 5,5 timmar. Det är knappast överväldigande, men förmodligen tillräckligt för många. Som jämförelse räcker batteriet i Apples MacBook Pro 15 Retina ca 2 timmar längre (med Mac OS) i samma scenario.
Om du vill ha längre batteritid måste du antingen köpa den dyrare modellen med bara SSD och 84 Wh, eller köpa 84-Wh-modulen separat och avstå från hårddisken. Några "billigare" SSD-versioner (t.ex. med FHD + i5 + 128 GB SSD) säljs tyvärr inte av Dell; den högre kapaciteten säljs bara i kombination med 4K-touch och Core i7.
XPS 15 måste strypa både GPU och CPU ganska ordentligt för att hantera värmen under stresstestet, men chassit blir ändå riktigt varmt. Testet är visserligen en extrem situation som inte uppstår i vardagen, men avancerade användare bör veta att hög parallell belastning kommer att strypa båda komponenterna – även när datorn är ansluten till elnätet. Däremot kan vi lugna spelentusiaster med att prestandan från grafikkortet GTX 960M inte skiljer sig från andra bärbara datorer med samma GPU under speltester.
Vi uppskattade de ganska balanserade högtalarna, men mikrofonen kan inte riktigt leva upp till förväntningarna. Inspelningarna påverkas alltid av en viss mängd brus.
Hybrid-hårddisken är en lyckad kompromiss mellan prestanda och lagringskapacitet. Överföringshastigheterna kan inte hålla jämna steg med en riktig SSD, men de är klart bättre än med långsamma konventionella hårddiskar. Dells "RAID" övertygar i våra tester och är nästan i klass SSD-baserade system. Vanliga hybriddiskar med integrerad SSD-cache är inte lika snabba.
