Lenovo IdeaPad S540 har rikligt med prestanda till ett bra pris oavsett vilket version du köper. Både S540-14IWL och -14API kostar runt 8.000 kronor och är identiska bortsett från att de har olika CPU och GPU.
Å ena sidan har S540-14API bättre flerkärnig prestanda jämfört med S540-14IWL, tack vare Ryzen 7 3700U-processorn. Men även om Radeon RX Vega 10 är kraftfull för att vara en integrerad GPU håller den inte jämna steg med den GeForce MX250 som sitter i S540-14IWL. RX Vega 10 saknar dessutom dedikerat VRAM och använder istället 2 GB av de 8 GB RAM som ingår. Effektivt sett gör detta att S540-API bara har 6 GB RAM jämfört med de 8 GB som S540-IWL har, då GeForce MX250 har 2 GB dedikerat GDDR5 VRAM.
Skärmen har ofta varit en svag punkt på nyare AMD-drivna laptops som vi recenserat och det gäller också S540-14API. Den har en mörkare skärm än sin Intel-drivna motsvarighet. Den har dock inte problem med PWM eller att bakgrundsbelysningen blöder, vilket är fallet på S540-14IWL. Däremot har båda skärmarna kraftiga delta E-2000 avvikelser och begränsad färgrymdstäckning.
Lenovo IdeaPad S540-14IWL och -14API är båda bra multimediaenheter på 14 tum. De är välbyggda, prisvärda och har tillräckligt med kraft för de flesta uppgifter du slänger åt dem. Båda missar dock topp-poäng av olika anledningar.
Vi uppskattade däremot den enkla och eleganta designen, som ser modern och nedtonad ut. Aluminiumhöljet är dessutom robust, precis som skärmlocket. IdeaPad S540 har ett bra portutbud även om användningen av den nu utdaterade HDMI 1.4b känns kortsiktig, precis som valet att inte inkludera stöd för DisplayPort eller Thunderbolt i den enda Typ C-porten. Detta, och ett byte av strömanslutningen mot en andra Typ C-port, hade framtidssäkrat S540 i åtminstone två eller tre år.
Båda enheterna har snabb NVMe-lagring, vilket hjälper systemet att flyta på smidigt. Det går att byta ut lagringsenheten mot en större sådan, men 512 GB bör räcka till för de flesta. Vi uppskattar att Lenovo har valt att inte inkludera en extra 2.5-tumsplats, då detta istället gjorde att de kunde sätta in ett stort batteri på 48 Wh. S540-14IWL har bättre batteritid än sitt AMD-drivna syskon, men båda står sig en hel dag mellan laddningarna.
Totalt sett är det knappt något som skiljer 540-14IWL från -14API. Den förstnämndas NVIDIA GPU ger bättre spel- och grafikprestanda än den sistnämndas integrerade RX Vega 10 GPU samtidigt som Ryzen 7 3700U har en fördel gentemot Core i5-8265U när det kommer till flerkärnade uppgifter. I slutändan är det en fråga om vilket du tycket är viktigast.
