De huvudsakliga fördelarna med vår Core i7 SKU jämfört med Ryzen 5 SKU:n inkluderar stöd för WiFi 6, högre lagringsprestanda, högre CPU-prestanda, integrerad AI-acceleration, högre spelprestanda och högre prestanda per Watt. Andra saker som skärm, WLAN-batteritid, yttemperatur och fläktens ljudnivå är antingen samma eller i princip likadana.
Det är inte är särskilt förvånande att vår Core i7 SKU presterar bättre än den billigare Ryzen 5 SKU:n, men det är marginalerna vi är intresserade av. Den rena CPU-prestandan är till exempel inte särskilt mycket snabbare, så det finns ingen anledning att välja Intel framför AMD bara på grund av processorns hästkrafter. Spelprestandan är också inkonsekvent då en del spel fungerar bättre på Intel och andra presterar ungefär lika bra. Sen är AI-accelerationen fortfarande mest en kuriositet för de flesta kontorsanvändare och har vid skrivande stund ingen direkt påverkan på vanliga vardagsuppgifter. När det kommer till AI kan Intel verkligen dra nytta av sina fördelar gentemot AMD, men det betyder inte särskilt mycket för konsumenterna om programmen inte är optimerade för att använda AI-acceleration.
För att sammanfatta så är skillnaderna i prestanda vid vardagsbruk mellan Core i7- och Ryzen 5-varianterna av Surface Laptop 3 mindre än förväntat, särskilt om man betänker den extra kostnaden som Microsoft tar för Intel-modellerna.
