Nya XCover är ett metaforiskt slag i ansiktet för alla fans av utomhustelefoner. Det kan låta hårt, men det är en väldigt exakt beskrivning av hur vi upplevde den. Trots att den utlovar (säkerhets)-uppdateringar under en lång tid framöver hade vi förväntat oss mer av nästan två års forskning och utveckling. Det är förvisso sant att XCover 4s har en del funktioner som är viktiga för utomhus-entusiaster, som ett utbytbart batteri, hårdvaruknappar och ett robust hölje. Men på den negativa sidan kompromissar den med alldeles för många saker vilket i slutändan gör att vi inte längre kan rekommendera den, särskilt inte med tanke på Samsungs rekommenderade pris.
Designen från 2017 är i princip helt oförändrat och infattningen är alldeles för bred för en modern smartphone, även i utomhuskategorin. Dessutom misstänker vi att problemen vi hade med vatten som tog sig in i den tidigare Galaxy XCover 4 fortfarande finns kvar med tanke på den praktiskt taget oförändrade designen. Batteritiden ligger under genomsnittet för utomhustelefoner och vi kan inte låta bli att undra hur Samsung har kunnat misslyckas med att öka batteriets kapacitet under de senaste två åren. Samma fråga får ställas för den interna lagringen. 32 GB långsam eMMC-lagring är dåligt för 2019 oavsett vad konkurrenterna har att erbjuda.
Samsung är herren på teppan i OLED-universat men väljer ändå att använda en medelmåttig och mörk IPS-panel med låg kontrast och dåliga betraktningsvinklar till XCover 4s. Systemet hade ganska dålig prestanda tack vare en jämförelsevis långsam Exynos SoC kombinerad med Samsungs egna One UI. En mer kraftfull SoC, som Samsung Exynos 7885, och mer RAM hade gjort underverk i det här fallet. Vi förstår heller inte varför Samsung inte inkluderat biometrisk identifiering på en utomhustelefon från 2019. Telefonen har dessutom en begränsad uppsättning LTE-band, vilket är konstigt då enheten trots allt är tydligt riktad mot företagskunder.
Nytt vin i gamla flaskor. Galaxy XCover 4s är inte dålig men vi hade förväntat oss mer efter två år.
