Not only has the under-display camera of the Axon 30 5G been greatly improved, but ZTE has also upgraded the device in all areas: A faster SoC as well as USB speeds, more RAM, and a 120 Hz AMOLED display. Read our review to find out whether the Axon 30 is a steal despite its low price tag.

I absolutely love that ZTE is working out the kinks for its under-display selfie camera. It’s incredibly joyful to look at the screen and not have your eyes immediately roam to a hole-punch cutout of any kind. And the quality itself is still much better than what Samsung packed into the Galaxy Z Fold 3. ZTE’s definitely leading the pack here, and we’re excited to see it adopted in future devices. But there’s always an elephant in the room, and the ZTE Axon 30’s stiffest competition comes straight from Google. The Pixel 6 is priced at $100 more (without any deals), but brings Android 12 out of the box, an IP68 rating, wireless charging, and a striking design. Sure, you’ll have to “deal” with a hole-punch cutout, but it’s really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. ZTE is definitely on the right track as the Axon 30 is still a competitive phone with a competitive price. Performance is just as good as you would hope, and even the camera system will get you by in most situations. It’s just the rest of the package that leaves us wanting more.

Innovative features don’t make or break a smartphone, but they certainly make the ZTE Axon 30 a more attractive option. With an invisible under-display camera and in-display fingerprint sensor, this almost-flagship device from ZTE does have a wow factor, which is hard to come by nowadays. Unfortunately, some of the device’s more glaring faults are hard to ignore, even at the reasonable mid-tier $500 starting price, which is a good bit cheaper than the Axon 30 Ultra at $750. There are no abject deal breakers on this phone, but you won’t see it at the top of a “Best Smartphone” this year. Suffice it to say, it provides a lot of cool features, but in the end the gimmicks don’t make up for the substantive shortcomings.

There’s certainly a market for the ZTE Axon 30. The massive edge-to-edge display and powerful processor make watching videos, playing games, and recording in 4K that much easier, and obviously everyone loves a big battery. Plus, with cool features like under-display cameras and in-display fingerprint sensors, it looks like a very modern phone. Still, it’s hard to ignore the better, more affordable options on the market, particularly when you consider the lackluster camera. The performance lags compared to competitors like Google and Samsung, even with the powerful processor, and the cheap body and flimsy buttons do not bode well for an enjoyable smartphone experience. You also can't ignore the Google Pixel 6, which is only $100 more. If you can afford the premium, the Pixel is a much better phone... unless you just really want an invisible under-display camera.

Wrapping up this review, the ZTE Axon 30 has a bunch of talking points—with the star of the show being the no-notch display. It effortlessly handles everyday tasks while its battery life is no slouch either. Despite this, I would hesitate to recommend it to someone. Especially due to its cameras. The ones on the back require further optimization whereas the front camera is abysmal when compared to regular selfie cameras. But if you’re someone who enjoys experimenting with cutting-edge technology, the Axon 30 could be worth a shot.

The ZTE Axon 30 5G is a welcome addition to the competitive mid-range smartphone market. While it’s pretty ordinary in many respects, its 6.92-inch 120Hz OLED display really stands out from the crowd. We can’t say we understand ZTE’s decision to focus on hiding the selfie camera so effectively behind that display, and we would have liked to have seen such a component married with more convincing specs elsewhere. But there’s no denying how tight the implementation of this technology is, even if it takes its toll on selfie quality. There are better-rounded mid-range phones on the market, such as the OnePlus Nord 2 and the Xiaomi Mi 11. But the ZTE Axon 30 5G’s party trick undoubtedly earns it a place at the table as an affordable media playback specialist.

The Axon 30 is ZTE’s next flagship phone that packs a ton of impressive specs alongside its standout feature: a truly edge-to-edge screen. Unlike nearly every other phone on the market, the Axon 30’s display doesn’t have a notch or cutout for the front-facing camera. To achieve this, ZTE has incorporated an under-display camera, one of the few in mainstream phones, which is visible when you’re taking front-facing photos but - disappears completely when not in use. Well, almost completely, for if you look closely there’s a small off-color square that the camera hides behind. The Axon 30’s cameras are also impressive for its price, capable of capturing great daylight photos with its range of ultra-wide and macro capabilities. It doesn’t have a telephoto lens, and its night mode requires some light to function – which pales compared to the flagship capability of phones like the iPhone 13 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S21. Overall, the ZTE Axon 30 is a great mid-range phone that offers excellent value compared to more expensive handsets – and has a feature that won’t come to other flagship phones until 2022 or later.

ZTE has crafted an excellent phone that delivers incredible performance and fast 5G speeds on a nice budget. $499 is easy to swallow for a higher end phone, and it’s certainly punching above its weight as far as performance goes. You’re getting a large battery, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, Android 11 out of the box; they’re crossed off a lot of the small things you’d expect from a nice phones these days. But it’s still not perfect. That camera, while good, leaves something to be desired, and the phone really does feel cheap. A nice solid case might round that out, but the cheaper materials and almost cheap-feeling weight don’t feel like a $500 phone, even if everything else about the phone is great. This phone’s not going to make sense for everybody, but it’s definitely worth checking out for most people.

The Axon 30 is arriving after the Axon 30 Ultra, and while it's not as powerful as its predecessor, it packs a nearly perfectly hidden under-display camera. Unfortunately, the camera quality isn't great, front or back, but this is a decently powerful device with a great screen, for around $500, so there are going to be compromises. Still, The ZTE Axon 30 is well built, runs a clean version of Android, and is a showcase for tech we can expect to become more common soon.

With the Axon 30, ZTE has proved it can successfully camouflage its under-display camera. But that doesn’t mean it’s up to the task. Image quality from the secretive selfie lens really isn’t good enough, even if the implementation is impressive. Aside from that, the Axon 30 has a gorgeous, fluid screen and a decent rear camera setup. The lack of wider 5G support in the US is frustrating in a 2021 phone, but there is still a lot here for $500. The bigger challenge is that competition is tough in the middleweight phone arena. Google’s latest Pixel, the 5a, rings in at $450, and offers better-performing cameras, front and back. If you’re struggling to pick between the two, the decision loosely boils down to a bigger screen or better selfies.

As we said, the Axon 30 5G has a few intriguing features on its specs sheet even if you look past the under-display selfie camera. It's got a high-performance Snapdragon 870 SoC, as well as a very good 120Hz OLED panel. Looking ahead, the Axon 30 5G may go down the price ladder, and then you can probably consider buying one. But for now, we suggest you skip it unless you are here solely for the novelty of the under-display camera.

While the under-display camera here is without rival - it's easily the best implementation of the technology to date, meaning the big screen can dominate - much of the Axon 30 5G's other features don't live up to quite such lofty heights. So-so cameras, some software hiccups, and limited battery ultimately distract from the mighty impressive semi-invisible front camera. Still, at this price point that's perfectly acceptable.

At its $499 price point for the 8GB/128GB base model, and $599 for the 12GB/256GB version, the Axon 30 is not exactly swimming with sharks when it comes to the competition. The main ones are the OnePlus 9, which is also suited for T-Mobile, but starts at $729 with faster processor and longer battery life. The other, more formidable direct competitor to the Axon 30 are the Motorola Edge 2021 specs, with the phone now dropped to $499, too, with bigger battery and camera sensor, but weaker processor/memory combo. Both of those, however, don't have the Axon 30's wow factor with its "all-screen" display design and cool hidden selfie camera, so if you are looking for a sub-$500 phone with most modern bells and whistles, the new ZTE budget champ deserves a strong consideration.

The $499 Axon 30 runs Android 11 on the Snapdragon 870 with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage plus a microSD card slot (a 12GB + 256GB version is also available). It has 4 rear cameras and the new 16MP under-display selfie camera puts the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s to shame. It comes with a 65 watt super-fast charger and a clear case. The unlocked phone is available direct from ZTE’s website in the US.

The Axon 30’s selfie camera is very out of sight, out of mind, but it’s still nowhere near the capabilities of regular front-facing cameras. It does the job for video calls and quick pictures, but I’d never rely on it for taking snapshots of anything “important”. It’s a means to an end in order to have a completely bezelless, no-hole-punch experience, and it achieves that quite well as a result. If you value a selfie camera, then I can’t stress enough how much this phone is not for you. However, if you don’t care about the selfie camera, then there’s no reason to not get the Axon 30. The area over the camera is no longer an eyesore and blends into the rest of the display, and it’s good enough for the occasional video call if required. The primary camera is excellent, the performance thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 is also stellar, and a starting price of €499 places this device in a pretty competitive space.

The ZTE Axon 30 5G is uniquely exciting because of its futuristic under-display camera and the phone’s unexpectedly good specs, combined with a fairly low price. Still, it's tricky to actually recommend the phone as a practical purchase. You may want to go for the Axon 30 5G because of the large display and great performance, which makes it an excellent option for games. The phone’s charging and battery life do well also, but are not the best you can get for the money. The photography is about passable, but it isn't any better than its rivals, particularly when it comes to selfie quality. The Axon 30 is a much better phone than the Axon 20 was, but unfortunately the competition has moved forward, too, as you can see with comparable phones from OnePlus and Samsung. At least the Axon 30 can still lay claim to having the best under-display camera on the market, especially when it costs about a third of the price of the other phone with the same feature.

That said, the ZTE Axon 30 still provides a lot of power for your dollar. In fact, its performance prowess can almost hang with the latest top-tier flagship phones, and its super-fast charging helps counterbalance the middling battery life. Lastly, its under-display camera technology is currently best in class and provides an experience unlike any other. So at $500, it’s hard to argue with ZTE’s offering here, but ultimately it’s going to come down to what you value most. If you’re looking for a big-screen powerful device, and care little for premium build quality the ZTE Axon 30 is a respectable option. Still, it’s sad to see ZTE miss the mark on some staple features and software support, which means the other impressive feats come at a significant trade-off, and for most, the Pixel 5a will be the better buy.

I am impressed with all the improvements ZTE has made with the Axon 30 5G. There are some significant improvements with the second-generation under-display selfie camera. But along with that, they have improved pretty much every single gripe or annoyance from the Axon 20 5G. I like the new hardware design language and despite being a large device how lightweight it feels in the hand. The display is better, brighter, with an improved touch sampling rate and a smaller chin. There is a better processor and storage is now UFS3.1. Battery life is still good and now there is 65W fast charge support. Software is better and there is 5G connectivity out of the box. In summary, all the little tweaks and changes result in a markedly improved user experience. If you are not a big selfie camera person and want an uninterrupted display for under $500 then the Axon 30 5G should be near the top of your shopping list.

One could live with the aforementioned aspects; however, the large deal-breaker is the unsatisfactory power efficiency of the panel. At 423nits brightness, the phone uses 2.87W of power, which is significantly worse than Samsung Display OLED panels (S20U – 2.4W, S21U, 1.8W) Much like the many phones that got ruined by inefficient displays in the past, it also looks like the Axon 30 is also suffering from a larger battery life hit due to the display. Given the choice of a UDC with an inefficient screen, or a hole-punch with an efficient screen, I’d always choose the latter. Overall, I think the Axon 30 is an interesting phone, but I can’t help feel it’s still more of an immature technology showcase rather than a refined product. I think the Ultra sibling is still a much better phone, but at least ZTE is pricing the Axon 30 at a quite reasonable level.

In the end, the ZTE Axon 30 5G is a tough one to figure. It sports a remarkably stunning display, and I admire the efforts to create a new OS. It shows initiative to better the product. Yet, I find myself nitpicking on the horrid selfie camera and the lack of wireless charging or an IP rating. For a $500 phone using a brand new technology, I might be asking too much. But if the Google Pixel 5a can offer water resistance on a phone that's $50 cheaper, I expect the Axon 30 5G to have at least an IP rating. That being said, if you are down for blurry selfies and don't care about the small details, you will be satisfied with this phone. The sheer computing power and that achingly pretty (oh-so-pretty) display will win your heart any day of the year. Just know what you signed up for when buying yourself one.

ZTE hedged all its bets on a gorgeous screen, decent performance and the innovation of an under-display camera, with the trade-offs being less-than-flagship internals, subpar camera quality and the lack of a water/dust resistance rating. The naff camera is a head scratcher, given the importance of having a good front-facing snapper. The picture quality, along with the distracting camera door, proves this technology is not ready for primetime. But all-in-all, the Axon 30 5G is a decent flagship-killing package for the price. If you can workaround its pitfalls, this is a glimpse at one of the next big steps forward in smartphone design.

As mentioned above, the ZTE Axon 30 5G smartphone is worth your money. But considering this phone perfect might not be good. It has the best gaming performance, aesthetic appearance, vibrant color screen, above-average camera technology, and most importantly, decent battery life. The under-display phone equips all the aspects users need for everyday use. Plus, it’s one of the best recommendations for performance enthusiasts looking for a powerful phone. However, at the same time, few negligible flaws appear on the Axon 30 phone, but when comparing with the plus point, it all makes sense in the end. If you’re looking for an alternative option, you can definitely check out the Mi Mix 4 smartphone.

ZTE Axon 30 5G not only satisfies the small regret of the previous generation of under-screen proactive effects, but its comprehensive configuration also understands the needs of users quite well. 120Hz high color gamut screen, Snapdragon 870 processor, Sony IMX 682 main camera, full-featured NFC, 55W fast charging, etc., are all flagship standard equipment without compromise.
