AMD Radeon RX 7900M prestandadebut: Alienware m18 R1 laptop recension

En oslipad diamant.

AMD gjorde succé med sin Ryzen-serie av mobila processorer, men det råder ingen tvekan om att deras diskreta mobila GPU:er har hamnat på efterkälken. Radeon RX 7900M gör rätt för sig genom att vara lika kraftfull som den mobila RTX 4080 för hundratals kronor mindre.

Som den första 18-tums bärbara datorn från Alienware på över ett decennium går Dell all-in på sin Alienware M18 R1-serie genom att erbjuda Intel-, AMD- och Nvidia-alternativ över hela linjen för att tilltala så många spelare som möjligt. Användare kan mixa och matcha mellan Intel-Nvidia, AMD-Nvidia eller AMD-AMD när det gäller processorer och GPU:er, vilket är mycket ovanligt för en bärbar speldator.

Vår enhet i recension är den senaste AMD-AMD-konfigurationen och en av de första som erbjuder 180 W RNDA3 Radeon RX 7900M som ett alternativ till den regerande mobila GeForce RTX 4080. Det kanske mest anmärkningsvärda är att den nya AMD GPU:n understiger RTX 4090-konfigurationen med $1200 USD med alla andra alternativ lika för ett slutpris på $2300 USD som granskat.

Tillbehör och garanti

Dell har ännu inte övergått till GaN AC-adaptrar som kan erbjuda högre effekt per volym än traditionella AC-adaptrar. Den medföljande 330 W AC-adaptern är därför mycket skrymmande jämfört med de 330 W GaN AC-adaptrar som för närvarande levereras med de flesta bärbara Razer Blade-datorer.

Den ettåriga begränsade standardgarantin gäller vid köp i USA.

Display

Två FreeSync-skärmalternativ är tillgängliga enligt följande:

  • 1920 x 1200, 480 Hz, 100% DCI-P3, IPS
  • 2560 x 1600, 165 Hz, 100% DCI-P3, IPS

Vår konfiguration använder den fetmarkerade panelen ovan, precis som i vår tidigare Intel-Nvidia-konfiguration. Panelleverantören är dock annorlunda den här gången (BOE vs. Chi Mei) för att antyda att Dell köper 480 Hz-paneler från flera leverantörer för sin Alienware m18-serie. Tack och lov finns det inga större skillnader mellan dem när det gäller färgtäckning, svarstider eller kontrast för en mycket liknande visningsupplevelse.

Uppdateringsfrekvensen på 480 Hz är den snabbaste som finns tillgänglig på bärbara datorer i skrivande stund för extremt mjuka rörelser med minimal spökbild. Fördelarna med snabba uppdateringsfrekvenser blir dock alltmer marginella ju högre upp i skalan du kommer. Det kan därför vara värt att överväga alternativet 1600p med högre upplösning istället, även om uppdateringsfrekvensen är långsammare eftersom 165 Hz fortfarande är en silkeslen upplevelse.

Det är värt att notera att den inbyggda uppdateringsfrekvensen på 480 Hz kan ställas in till 240 Hz eller 120 Hz via Windows, men inte lägre. Det är synd att det inte finns något 60 Hz-alternativ eftersom höga uppdateringsfrekvenser påverkar strömförbrukningen, vilket vårt avsnitt om energihantering nedan kommer att visa.

Märkligt nog är modellen kalibrerad mot sRGB-spektrumet redan från start, trots att den stöder fullständiga DCI-P3-färger. Detta skulle också inträffa på vår Intel-Nvidia-konfiguration.

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Vi ställde in Alienware Command Center på Overdrive-läge innan vi körde riktmärkena nedan. Det är viktigt att känna till Command Center för att kunna styra specifika funktioner i den bärbara datorn, inklusive RGB-belysning, strömprofiler och spelspecifika profiler.

Vi rekommenderar också att du laddar ner AMD Adrenalin för att få de senaste GPU-drivrutinerna och för att slå på/av alla GPU-funktioner.

Processor

CPU-prestanda är den klassiska AMD vs. Intel-affären där våra Ryzen 9 7945HX erbjuder 5 till 10 procent snabbare rå multi-thread-prestanda än den konkurrerandeCore i9-13980HX samtidigt som den är 5 till 10 procent långsammare i enkeltrådsprestanda. Det är i princip på samma nivå som den senaste Ryzen 9 7945HX3D för att vara en av de snabbaste mobila processorerna på marknaden. Nedgradering till Ryzen 9 7845HX eller Ryzen 7 7745HX förväntas minska processorprestandan med cirka 20 till 25 procent respektive 40 till 50 procent.

Prestandahållbarheten är utmärkt, vilket exemplifieras av de stabila poängen när CineBench R15 xT körs i en loop.

Systemets prestanda

PCMark-resultaten är några av de högsta för en bärbar speldator och placerar vår Alienware m18 på samma nivå som några av de snabbaste Intel-Nvidia-alternativen. Tyvärr är användarupplevelsen mindre än fantastisk i praktiken på grund av alla buggar vi observerade. Några anmärkningsvärda inkluderar:

  • Huvudskärmen stängs ibland av utan anledning och en omstart krävs
  • Startar inte om en extern bildskärm är ansluten
  • Det gick inte att köra 3DMark Speed Way och Blender Classroom HIP/AMD-benchmarks
  • Ovanligt hög strömförbrukning i standby-läge

Dessa problem uppstod mer än en gång, även med de senaste Windows-uppdateringarna och AMD-drivrutinerna installerade i skrivande stund (31.0.22023.1014).

Minnesprestandan är också märkbart långsammare än många Intel-baserade bärbara speldatorer. Detta verkar inte vara en fluke heller eftersom vår Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 med samma Ryzen 9 CPU som vår Alienware skulle också returnera liknande låga siffror.

GPU-prestanda

AMD marknadsför Radeon RX 7900M som en direkt konkurrent till den mobila GeForce RTX 4080 och vi tycker att det är en mycket rättvis jämförelse. 3DMark-resultaten är i nivå med RTX 4080 i Alienware m16 R1 om inte bara något snabbare i det DX11-baserade Fire Strike -testet. Det råa prestandahoppet över förra årets Radeon RX 6850M XT är betydande på cirka 40 till 60 procent. AMD hade inget riktigt svar på de mobila RTX 4070, 4080 eller 4090 innan lanseringen av Radeon RX 7900M.

RT-acceleration har alltid varit en svag punkt i Radeon-serien, men detta har förbättrats avsevärt för Radeon RX 7900M. Vår Port Royal-poäng ligger cirka 10 procent bakom en mobil GeForce RTX 4080 för att representera en 2x till 2,5x ökning jämfört med förra årets Radeon RX 6800M. Att aktivera RT rekommenderades tidigare aldrig på en Radeon-driven bärbar dator på grund av den enorma prestandaförlusten, men Radeon RX 7900M är den vändpunkt som AMD-fans har väntat på.

Att köra i Performance-läge eller Balanced-läge istället för Overdrive-läge minskar prestandan med bara några få procentenheter, vilket framgår av vår Fire Strike resultattabell nedan. De små skillnaderna är anmärkningsvärda eftersom skillnaderna i fläktljud mellan dessa lägen är betydande, vilket beskrivs i vårt avsnitt om systemljud nedan.

Spelprestanda

3DMark-resultaten översätts väl till faktisk spelprestanda. Bildfrekvenserna vid testning av Cyberpunk 2077 eller F1 22 skulle ligga inom ensiffriga procentenheter av den mobila RTX 4080 i de flesta scenarier. Om RT aktiveras kommer prestandaförsämringen dock fortfarande att vara brantare jämfört med den konkurrerande Nvidia GPU:n. Till exempel skulle vår Alienware köra 15 och 35 procent långsammare än den mobila RTX 4080 när RT aktiveras i F1 22 respektive Cyberpunk 2077, även om de två GPU:erna annars ligger mycket nära varandra när RT är inaktiverat.

AMD har introducerat FSR 3 tillsammans med lanseringen av Radeon RX 7900M som ett direkt svar på DLSS 3. Precis som Nvidias lösning innehåller uppskalningstekniken både ramgenerering och latensreducering för att kompensera för den stora prestandaförlusten när RT är aktiverat. Tyvärr är FSR 3 för närvarande i sin linda och knappt några spel stöder funktionen, medan antalet spel som stöder DLSS 3 har haft mycket längre tid på sig att växa. Inte ens Cyberpunk 2077 har stöd för FSR 3 i skrivande stund. Fler spel kommer att uppdateras med FSR 3-stöd fram till 2024 och därefter. Under tiden måste ägarna klara sig med den äldre men mer allmänt stödda FSR 2.

Det är värt att notera att vi inte stötte på några spelbrytande buggar trots alla de problem som vi noterade i avsnittet om systemprestanda ovan. Ytterligare spel kommer att testas och läggas till i listan nedan med tiden.

Prestandan sjönk ibland till låga 70 FPS från höga ~180 FPS vid tomgångskörning på Witcher 3 vilket visas i diagrammet nedan. Under spelet skulle prestandasänkningarna manifesteras som stutter även när det inte finns några spelrörelser. Detta skulle inträffa med en tydlig frekvens som tyder på ett störande bakgrundsproblem som bör åtgärdas.

Prestandabuggen uppstod inte när testet upprepades på Intel-Nvidia-konfigurationen av samma Alienware-modell.

Buller från systemet

Det finns inga större skillnader i fläktljud mellan våra Intel- och AMD-konfigurationer. Detta är dock inte nödvändigtvis en bra sak, eftersom fläktarna i vår AMD-enhet pulserade ganska ofta och till synes utan anledning när vi surfade på webben eller strömmade video. Systemet kördes tyst vid 23 dB(A) och pulserade sedan kraftigt upp till 33,5 dB(A) även när vi använde strömförsörjningsprofilerna Tyst eller Batteri.

Intressant nog finns det inga skillnader i fläktljud mellan kraftprofilerna Balanserad och Prestanda, eftersom vi kan registrera högst 48 dB(A) när vi spelar med någon av profilerna. Om du spelar i Overdrive-läget ökar dock fläktljudet till skrikiga 54 dB(A). Användare kanske då vill överväga att spela i Performance-läget för märkbart tystare fläktar, även om det innebär att man offrar 5 till 10 procent prestanda.

Förvänta dig inte att Alienware ska vara mycket tystare än andra 18-tums bärbara speldatorer trots att den har två gånger så många fläktar inuti. Systemet låter fortfarande mer än 50 dB(A) när du spelar, vilket praktiskt taget kräver ett par bra hörlurar.

Temperatur

Yttemperaturerna liknar de vi registrerade på Intel-Nvidia-konfigurationen och de förblir svalare än vad man kan förvänta sig på grund av den stora skärmstorleken, stora ventilationsgaller, stor bakre design och högt antal interna fläktar. Stresstest

CPU-temperaturen och paketets strömförbrukning under Prime95-stress skulle ligga på ~97 C respektive ~145 W, vilket faktiskt är mycket likt vad vi observerade på Intel-konfigurationen med Core i9-13980HK. Turbo Boost är dock högre och mer aggressiv med Intel-processorn under början av testet, vilket vår strömförbrukningssektion visar.

AMD annonserar en TGP på 180 W som vi kan uppnå när vi kör Witcher 3 på Overdrive-läget. Att gå ner till balanserat läge eller prestandaläge sänker dock TGP-taket till 165 W, vilket visas i skärmdumparna nedan. GPU-klockfrekvenserna är något lägre som ett resultat vilket korrelerar med våra Fire Strike poäng som nämns ovan, vilket innebär att det mycket högljudda Overdrive-läget är obligatoriskt för maximal prestanda.

Upprepning av Witcher 3 testet med vår Intel-Nvidia RTX 4090-konfiguration skulle resultera i en jämförelsevis lägre strömförbrukning för GPU-kortet på 161 W för att visa överlägsen prestanda per watt jämfört med vår Radeon RX 7900M.

Observera att CPU- och GPU-temperaturerna är något svalare när du spelar i Overdrive-läget jämfört med Balanced- eller Performance-läget eftersom fläktarna går märkbart högre.

Energiförvaltning

Strömförbrukning

Strömförbrukningen är en fram-och-tillbaka mellan AMD-AMD- och Intel-Nvidia-konfigurationerna av Alienware m18 R1. Å ena sidan är Ryzen 7 7945HX mer effektiv än Core i9-13980HX; den kan slutföra CineBench R15 xT benchmark på ungefär samma tid som Core i9 samtidigt som den kräver 50 till 60 W mindre ström från elnätet. Å andra sidan är Radeon RX 7900M mindre effektiv än GeForce RTX 4080 eller 4090; att köra FurMark, till exempel, skulle dra cirka 50 W mer på vår AMD-konfiguration. Den totala prestandan per watt kan därför svänga mot en konfiguration över den andra beroende på hur CPU- eller GPU-intensiva dina applikationer kan vara.

Att köra CPU och GPU samtidigt med 100 procents utnyttjande skulle fortfarande dra upp till 333 W från den stora 330 W AC-adaptern, ungefär som vad vi observerade i Intel-Nvidia-konfigurationen. Intel Core i9-processorn tenderar dock att dra mer ström mer frikostigt än vår Ryzen 9 och därför tenderar den totala strömförbrukningen att vara högre än vår AMD-konfiguration när du spelar. Detta kan observeras när man kör Witcher 3 vilket framgår av tabellen nedan.

Förbrukningen när datorn går på tomgång är inte optimerad vilket kan bidra till den mycket korta batteritiden. Vi kan ibland mäta en förbrukningsnivå så hög som 101 W även när vi använder energiprofilen Balanserad och inga aktiva applikationer körs. Förbrukningen i standby-läge skulle också vara mycket hög på 25 W när den borde vara närmare bara 1 eller 2 watt.

Vi rekommenderar att du minskar uppdateringsfrekvensen från 480 Hz till 120 Hz om strömförbrukningen är ett problem, eftersom denna enkla förändring kan spara upp till 11 W, vilket visas i diagrammet nedan. Det är synd att just den här panelen inte erbjuder alternativ för variabel uppdateringsfrekvens.

Batteritid

Körtiderna är mycket dåliga även för en stor bärbar dator för spel. Även i det bästa scenariot med bokstavligen allt avstängt eller inställt på minimum (AlienFX avstängt, minsta ljusstyrka, 120 Hz uppdateringsfrekvens, inga program igång, trådlöst avstängt, batterisparläge) kan vi bara registrera knappt 4,5 timmars drifttid innan automatisk avstängning. Detta skulle sjunka till bara 95 minuter när du surfar på webben jämfört med Acer Predator Helios 18 eller Razer Blade 18 som var och en kan hålla i några timmar längre.

Laddning från tom till full kapacitet med den medföljande nätadaptern tar cirka 2 till 2,5 timmar. Modellen har inte stöd för laddning via USB-C till skillnad från de flesta andra moderna bärbara speldatorer och därför är du i princip bunden till den enorma 330 W AC-adaptern när du reser.

I skrivande stund kostar Core i9-13900HX/RTX 4080-konfigurationen av Alienware m18 R1 med 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD och 1200p-skärm 2950 USD. Samtidigt kostar Ryzen 9 7945HX/RX 7900M-konfigurationen med exakt samma RAM-minne, SSD och skärm 2300 USD. AMD-alternativet ger snabbare CPU-prestanda och nästan samma GPU-prestanda för nästan 700 USD mindre. Det behöver knappast sägas att prestanda per dollar är det starkaste försäljningsargumentet för AMD:s nya SKU och en av de största anledningarna till att hoppa över Intel och Nvidia. Prisskillnaden är så stor att man till och med kan ha överseende med alla problem som vi har upplevt på vår tidiga testenhet bara för att spara hundratals dollar.

Bärbara speldatorer med GeForce RTX 4080 har haft skyhöga priser under hela året. Det mycket kostnadseffektiva AMD Radeon RX 7900M är den rätta utmanaren för att äntligen få ner dessa priser på jorden igen.

Trots detta är buggarna inte obetydliga. Skärmen som stängs av, startproblem, bildhopp vid videouppspelning, stammar vid spel och ovanligt hög strömförbrukning vid tomgång bör absolut åtgärdas. Som ett resultat finns det ingen anledning att gå ut och köpa Alienware m18 R1 med enbart AMD medan vi väntar på att korrigeringar och FSR 3-stöd långsamt ska rullas ut över tiden.

Det finns fortfarande anledningar att välja Intel-Nvidia över AMD-AMD när alla buggar har lösts. Hur imponerande Radeon 7900M än må vara, är den mobila RTX 4080 fortfarande snabbare i genomsnitt, särskilt om du gillar att spela med RT aktiverat. De som vill ha det bästa och snabbaste oavsett kostnad bör därför hålla sig till GeForce -serien. För resten av oss dödliga med stramare budgetar ser Radeon 7900M ut som ett bra alternativ till den dyra RTX 4080 som många har väntat på. Vi hoppas att GPU:n kommer att dyka upp i många fler bärbara speldatorer inom en snar framtid och inte bara i ett fåtal utvalda.

Dell levererar nu direkt Alienware m18 R1 i alla konfigurationsnivåer. Alternativt erbjuder Best Buy Ryzen 9/7900M-konfigurationen för $2800 USD.
