Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 recension - Batteritiden hos den bärbara datorn Copilot+ är en besvikelse

Snapdragon X Elite med flera nedgraderingar. Samsung har utökat sin Galaxy Book4-serie med två Snapdragon-varianter som har 14-tums och 16-tums skärmar. Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 har många likheter med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 men vid närmare granskning finns det en hel del skillnader - tyvärr mestadels negativa för den nya ARM-bärbara datorn.

Samsung har utökat sin nuvarande Galaxy Book 4-serie med Edge 14 och Edge 16, som båda är utrustade med de nya Snapdragon X Elite-processorerna från Qualcomm. Båda modellerna är utrustade med samma skal och skärmar som de välkända Galaxy Book4 Pro-varianterna. Idag kommer vi att testa den större Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 med Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-80-100), 16 GB RAM och 512 GB lagringsutrymme. Dess MRSP är 1 449,99 USD, vilket är cirka 65 USD mer än den jämförbara Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 med Intel Core Ultra 7 155H.

I den här recensionen kommer vi främst att fokusera på den nya Snapdragon-processorn samt dess effekter på den bärbara datorns utsläpp och batteritid. Dessutom kommer vi att ta en titt på eventuella andra skillnader mellan de två modellerna. Fodral och anslutningsmöjligheter

I allmänhet är den enda skillnaden som Galaxy Book4 Edge 16:s fodral visar jämfört med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 är i färgen, eftersom den här modellen har en ljusare silverfärg med en lätt blåaktig nyans. Snapdragon-versionen är alltså en lika supertunn 16-tums bärbar dator med ett stabilt och högkvalitativt metallhölje. Enheten ser elegant ut och dess ytor drar inte till sig många fingeravtrycksmärken. Vi är bara inte stora fans av den breda nedre displayramen.

Det finns inga skillnader mellan Edge och Pro när det gäller själva anslutningarna, men du måste klara dig utan Thunderbolt-stöd. Eftersom båda USB-C-portarna stöder USB 4.0 bör detta dock inte vara ett verkligt problem i praktiken.

Edge 16 har en fördel när det gäller sin Wi-Fi-modul, eftersom den redan stöder Wi-Fi 7 och Bluetooth 5.4. Vi har ännu ingen Wi-Fi 7-router, men med vår Wi-Fi 6E-referensrouter från Asus var överföringshastigheterna i både 5 GHz- och 6 GHz-nätverken mycket bra och stabila. En 5G-version av Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 är inte tillgänglig.

Underhåll

Bottenlocket sitter fast med fyra skruvar som är placerade under de insatta (ej fastlimmade) gummifötterna. På insidan finns det dock några stora skillnader jämfört med Galaxy Book4 Pro. De två fläktarna är identiska och batteriet är också åtkomligt, men Samsung har tagit bort de två M.2 2280-platserna och istället installerat UFS 4.0-lagring, som är välkänt från smartphones. Detta är en klar nackdel jämfört med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 och som ett resultat kan varken dess RAM eller dess lagringskapacitet utökas.

Inmatningsenheter - Numeriskt tangentbord och bakgrundsbelysning

Dess inmatningsenheter är identiska med dem på Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 och även om tangenttryckningarna är exakta känns tangentbordet inte som det bästa att skriva på eftersom tangenterna har så kort lyft. Personer som skriver mycket bör definitivt prova tangentbordet innan de köper den bärbara datorn. För att säkerställa god synlighet i mörka miljöer finns vit bakgrundsbelysning i tre nivåer, som kan aktiveras automatiskt via en sensor. Den stora klickplattan är mjuk och smidig och fungerar tillförlitligt - klickljuden är bara lite höga. Du kan också använda den kapacitiva pekskärmen för inmatningar. Strömknappen är integrerad längst upp till höger på tangentbordet och fungerar även som fingeravtrycksläsare.

Display - 120-Hz OLED med pekskärm

Samsung använder OLED-skärmen med ID ATNA60CL07-0 i Galaxy Book4 Edge 16. Exakt samma panel finns också i Galaxy Book4 Pro 16, varför vi rekommenderar att du tar en titt på vår recension av Pro 16 för en mer detaljerad analys. Subjektivt sett är Samsungs senaste OLED-generation utmärkt och trots att den har en pekskärm noterade vi ingen rastereffekt som på den äldre Samsung OLED i den nuvarande Dell XPS 16. Ljusstyrkan är ca 400 cd/m² i SDR-läge och upp till 550 cd/m² i HDR-läge. Dessutom har Samsung tillhandahållit korrekta profiler för sRGB och P3-färgrymden.

Prestanda - Snapdragon X Elite och UFS-lagring

Vid sidan av vår testkonfiguration erbjuder Samsung också en variant med den snabbare Snapdragon X Elite (X1E-84-100) och en lagringskapacitet på 1 TB för en MRSP på 1 749,99 USD. RAM-minnet är dock också begränsat till 16 GB i den här modellen.

Vi körde igenom vår normala testbana, men alla program var inte kompatibla och många tester fanns inte tillgängliga som inbyggda ARM-appar. Men eftersom du sannolikt kommer att konfronteras med emulering under praktisk användning har vi också inkluderat dessa resultat.

Samsung erbjuder de tre vanliga energiprofilerna tyst, optimerad och hög prestanda även för sin ARM-modell. Det optimerade läget är aktivt som standard och vi använde det också för våra mätningar/benchmarks.

Processor - Snapdragon X1E-80-100

Samsung erbjuder Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 med antingen X1E-80-100 eller den snabbare X1E-84-100 (högre dual-core turbo & multi-core klocka, snabbare iGPU). Vår testenhet är utrustad med X1E-80-100 som har totalt 12 kärnor på 3,4 GHz samt en dubbelkärnig turbo på 4,0 GHz. Alla ytterligare tekniska detaljer kan hittas i vår analysartikel om de nya Snapdragon-processorerna. Baserat på dess strömförbrukning antar vi en CPU TDP på cirka 23-30 watt och därmed jämförbara värden med ARM-modellerna från Microsoft. Prestandan uppfyllde våra förväntningar och Snapdragon X Elite är verkligen en snabb processor, särskilt när man kör inbyggda applikationer. Oavsett är dess prestanda helt tillräcklig för vardagliga uppgifter.

Vi kunde inte utföra vårt standardiserade latensprov eftersom LatencyMon-applikationen inte kan startas på ARM-systemet. När vi spelade upp en 4K YouTube-video noterade vi åtminstone inga problem med tappade bildrutor.

Lagringsenhet

När det gäller lagringsmediet i den bärbara datorn har Samsung inte använt en vanlig PCIe SSD, utan istället har man valt en lödd UFS 4.0-lagring, som annars är känd från smartphones och surfplattor. Dess prestanda är inget problem alls och dess överföringshastigheter förblir helt stabila även under långvarig belastning. Det går dock inte att utöka lagringsutrymmet, vilket innebär att Samsung har offrat en av de största fördelarna med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16som har två platser för vanliga M.2 2280 SSD-enheter. Efter första uppstarten av enheten har användarna 403 GB till sitt förfogande. Ytterligare SSD-riktmärken listas här.

Den integrerade Adreno X1-85 tar hand om grafikberäkningar, varvid den i kombination med X1E-80-100 är den långsammare av de två modellerna och har en klockfrekvens på 1,2 GHz och 3,6 TFLOPS. Under vardaglig användning gör iGPU:n ett riktigt bra jobb och även uppspelning av högupplösta videor är inget problem för enheten. Problem börjar uppstå när man kör mer komplexa applikationer (den inbyggda DaVinci Resolve-appen körs inte så bra som förväntat) eller spelar spel, till exempel. Under vårt test släppte Qualcomm en ny beta GPU-drivrutin (31.0.60.0) som förmodligen förbättrar dess kompatibilitet - detta kan vi bekräfta. Som ett exempel noterade vi inte längre några krascher när vi spelade Cyberpunk 2077 och du kan nu också köra Far Cry 5 på den bärbara Snapdragon-datorn (om än med rejäla ramfall). Trots detta kvarstår dess grundläggande kompatibilitetsproblem och i jämförelse med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16finns det helt enkelt begränsningar.

Den bärbara datorns grafikprestanda i sig har bara förbättrats minimalt av den här nya drivrutinen. GPU:ns prestanda förblir stabil under långvarig belastning och i batteriläge. Ytterligare GPU-benchmarks finns tillgängliga här.

Bullerutsläpp

ARM-modellen har förvisso vissa fördelar jämfört med Intel-varianten när det gäller fläktarna, för i viloläge och under enkla applikationer är de praktiskt taget aldrig aktiva. Även under högre belastning tar det ett tag innan fläktarna blir hörbara. Vid gaming och under stresstestet med maximal CPU/GPU-belastning uppmätte vi maximalt 32,4 dB(A) med optimerad profil. Fläktljudet var dock ganska högt och därmed subjektivt mer irriterande än vad värdet antyder. Med högprestandaläget blir de mycket högre - vi noterade en topp på 43,2 dB(A). Vi märkte inte av några andra elektroniska ljud från vår testenhet under testperioden.

Temperatur

Vi kan se effekterna av det låga fläktljudet i hur varm den bärbara datorn blir - även om allt förblir inom det gröna området när du utför enkla uppgifter blir metallhöljet helt enkelt för varmt under belastning. Vi uppmätte ibland mer än 50 °C och nästan 10 °C mer än på Intel-modellen. I dessa fall bör enheten inte placeras på låren och direkt hudkontakt bör undvikas. Tangentbordsområdet blir också märkbart varmt, men detta bör inte begränsa dess användning.

Strömförbrukning

Våra förbrukningsmätningar visar inte på några verkliga effektivitetsfördelar för den bärbara ARM-datorn jämfört med Intel-varianten. Faktum är att dess strömförbrukning redan är något högre i viloläge. Vid spel använder den cirka 40 watt och i stresstestet uppmätte vi strax under 62 watt i början, vilket sedan planade ut på cirka 52 watt efter några sekunder. Det 65-watts nätaggregat som levereras med enheten är därför tillräckligt kraftfullt. Vi noterade också den höga standby-förbrukningen på nästan 1 watt som en negativ punkt.

Körtider

Den största överraskningen ligger i Galaxy Book4 Edge 16:s körtider - men tyvärr i negativ bemärkelse. Vi kontrollerade resultaten flera gånger men i varje scenario (förutom HDR-videouppspelning - 5 timmar för Pro, 7 timmar för Edge) presterade Snapdragon Galaxy betydligt sämre än Galaxy Book4 Pro 16. Ännu värre är att den nya Edge 16 hamnade efter nästan alla sina konkurrenter under både Wi-Fi-testet och videotestet. I Wi-Fi-testet vid 150 cd/m² uppmätte vi strax under 7,5 timmar och endast cirka 5,5 timmar vid full ljusstyrka. Samsung måste snarast göra något åt detta. Dess videotid vid 150 cd/m² var bättre med cirka 14,5 timmar, men även här är det nästan 5 timmar mindre än Intel-modellen.

Notera: Edge 16 erbjuder inte ett alternativ för att minska frekvensen från 120 till 60 Hz. Det aktiva signalläget på Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 var dock alltid 120 Hz, så resultaten är jämförbara.

Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 är en stor bärbar dator för vardagsbruk med en imponerande 16-tums OLED-pekskärm och ett slimmat metallhölje. Den nya Snapdragon-processorn ger många fördelar, t.ex. Wi-Fi 7 och Copilot+-funktionerna. Dess lägre fläktljud är också en fördel i vardagen, men detta sker på bekostnad av yttemperaturer under belastning. Bortsett från detta finns det i stort sett bara nackdelar jämfört med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 med Intel-processor.

Först och främst måste vi nämna kompatibilitetsproblemen, eftersom de nya Snapdragon-bärbara datorerna står inför begränsningar jämfört med "vanliga" Windows-bärbara datorer med AMD- eller Intel-processorer. Detta märks inte bara när man spelar spel eller kör applikationer, utan det kan också bli ett problem när man ansluter kringutrustning som skrivare, skannrar eller externa ljudkort. Samsung hänvisar åtminstone till detta problem på sin produktsida. En annan stor nackdel är frånvaron av de två M.2 2280 SSD-kortplatserna. Istället har Samsung satsat på UFS lagring som är känd från smartphones. Även om dess prestanda är bra har Samsung sparat lite pengar på att göra det och användare lämnas ute i kylan så snart de vill öka enhetens lagringskapacitet.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 med Snapdragon X Elite blev en besvikelse under vårt test och har inga avgörande fördelar jämfört med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 med Intel CPU. På grund av förlusten av de två SSD-platserna, betydligt kortare körtider, begränsad mjukvaru- och hårdvarukompatibilitet samt det högre priset är vi inte säkra på varför potentiella köpare ska välja Snapdragon-varianten.

Den största fördelen med de nya bärbara Snapdragon-datorerna ska vara att de har bättre batteritid. Men detta är helt enkelt inte fallet med Galaxy Book4 Edge 16 - i själva verket är dess körtider mycket kortare än på Intel-varianten. Slutligen måste vi nämna dess pris som är cirka 65 USD mer än Galaxy Book4 Pro 16. I sig är Edge 16 inte på något sätt en dålig enhet, men så snart priset och jämförelsen med Galaxy Book4 Pro 16 tas med i beräkningen kan vi bara inte rekommendera den nya Snapdragon-varianten.
