Eftersom detta är den första kommersiellt tillgängliga laptopen utrustad med Raven Ridge så kan vårt omdöme delas upp i två delar. Det första relaterar till själva AMD-hårdvaran. På papperet, en 25 W cTDP Ryzen 5 2500U APU och en RX Vega 8 GPU kan stå jämsides aktuella 15 W Kaby Lake-R alternativ (i5-8250, i7-8550U) och presterar bättre än Iris Pro Graphics 580 i syntetiska tester. Kombinera detta med en generellt lägre prislapp och det verkar inte finnas någon anledning att välja Intel över AMD om allt annat är likadant.
Olyckligtvis för AMD är inte allt annat likadant och Raven Ridge är helt enkelt inte redo för bästa sändningstid. Vår testenhet är extraordinärt långsam och lider av slumpartade krascher. Systemet kraschade särskilt mycket när GPU:n belastades eller vid spel-belastning på samma sätt som den tidigare generationens AMD Dual Graphics-laptops såsom Asus FX550IU. Syntetiska prestandatester må visa att Vega 8 är snabbare än den åldrande GeForce 940MX, men det motsatta är sant vid körning av dom flesta moderna spel. Detta är typiskt AMD på gott och ont - utmärkt prestanda-per-krona som i slutändan dras ner av undermåliga drivrutiner och utvecklarstöd.
Potentiella köpare som dras till den imponerande processorprestandan kommer finna det lägre priset, jämfört med en Intel Kaby Lake-R motsvarighet, lockande. Å andra sidan kommer gamers inte finna annat än besvikelse i RX Vega 8 innan drivrutinerna har kommit ifatt. Den må vara dubbelt så kraftfull som UHD Graphics 620 i våra syntetiska tester, men MX150 är ändå en bättre investering för pålitligt 1080p-spelande på budgetnivå.
Den andra delen av vårt omdöme är för denna HP-laptop i sin helhet. Tillverkaren har på ett lyckat sätt införlivat Spectre-modellernas tunna infattning på sina instegsmodeller i Envy-serien, som är tjusigare och minst lika tuffa som den utgående generationens. Bortsett från den nya designen på chassit är det dock inte mycket annat som förbättrats. Det här var HP:s chans att lyfta alla aspekter av Envy x360 15-serien men istället har vi samma mörka tryckkänsliga 1080p-skärm, begränsade färgrymd och kännetecknande PWM som förra årets modell. Högtalarna, SD-läsaren, tangentbordet, styrplattan, gångjärnen, helhetsvikten och det pulserande ljudet från fläkten är inte heller nämnvärt förbättrade från 2016 års modell. Den största fördelen med den senaste designen är med andra ord det tunnare utseendet och kanske den aningen längre batteritiden samt USB Typ-C Gen.1 porten.
AMD:s nya Raven Ridge-plattform är en lovvärd insats, men det är synd att den lider av samma dåliga mjukvara och drivrutiner som har plågat chiptillverkaren i åratal. Vi kan inte rekommendera detta HDD-baserade AMD-system från HP förrän GPU-glitcharna har blivit patchade.
