Vår ursprungliga fråga om "Kan de få detta att fungera?" kommer av faktum att Huawei P40 inte har tillgång till Googles tjänster. Svaret är definitivt "kanske". Å ena sidan är Huawei P40 en toppskiktstelefon med en bra kamerauppsättning, rimliga batteritider, hög prestanda och snabbt WiFi.
Å andra sidan har den en stor nackdel: Att Googles tjänster saknas gör det omöjligt att använda Google Maps eller Google Play Butik och kan i teorin också orsaka problem med andra appar. Även om App Gallery växer stadigt och det i teorin också går att installera appar från okända källor innebär det sistnämnda en säkerhetsrisk för vanliga användare och till och med för avancerade användare kan det vara svårt att avgöra huruvida filer som laddats ner från externa källor har manipulerats.
Huawei stöttar användarna på många sätt, vilket inkluderar appar och tjänster som hjälper till vid den ursprungliga installationen. Men den är ändå svårsåld, särskilt med tanke på att det finns så många andra alternativa telefoner där dessa saker fungerar redan vid leverans.
Med det sagt har Huaweis ekosystem utvecklats snabbare än väntat, så det är möjligt att situationen ändrats om ett år eller två, vilket gör Huawei till ett ordentligt alternativ för alla som inte vill ha Google på sin telefon.
Huawei P40 är en lyxig toppskiktstelefon som tvingar användarna att kompromissa eftersom Googles tjänster saknas.
Vidare känns det som att Huawei i huvudsak fokuserar på P40 Pro och som ett resultat upplevs det som att P40 hamnar efter vid en direkt jämförelse med dess konkurrenter: För det första kan bara en del av optiken användas för videoinspelning och optisk zoom är begränsad till foton.
För det andra är skärmens uppdateringsfrekvens begränsad till vanliga 60 Hz, ett område där Galaxy S20 har mer att erbjuda. Den saknar också trådlös laddning, skärmen kunde varit mer ljusstark och dessutom behöver man ställa sig frågan om man vill köpa ett dedikerat minneskort endast för Huawei P40 eftersom den inte har stöd för microSD.
