Om du inte har något emot att ge upp några extrafunktioner kan Pulse GL76 leverera när det gäller prestanda och bildkvalitet, särskilt för sitt pris på 1200-1400 USD. Förvänta dig mer försäljning när vi närmar oss lanseringen av mobila bärbara datorer GeForce 40.

Pulse GL76 är en bärbar MSI-speldator i mellanklassen mellan de billigare Katana- eller Sword-serierna och de dyrare GE Raider- eller GT Titan-serierna. Det är i princip en 17,3-tumsversion av den mindre 15,6-tums Pulse GL66. GL76-modellerna 2021 och 2022 har identiska chassikonstruktioner.

Vår enhet i recensionen är en högre konfiguration med 12th gen Core i7-12700H CPU, 105 W GeForce RTX 3070 GPU och 360 Hz 1080p IPS-skärm för cirka 1 300 USD i detaljhandelspris. Andra SKU:er finns tillgängliga med lägre uppdateringsfrekvens för skärmen, GeForce RTX 3050/3050 Ti/3060 GPU:er eller Core i5-12500H CPU i stället.

Konkurrenterna till Pulse GL76 är andra bärbara 17,3-tums gamingdatorer i mellanklassen, t.ex Acer Nitro 5, Asus TUF-serie, HP Victus-serien, eller Dell G-serien.

Case - inga tjusiga färger eller lysdioder

Chassit är mestadels av plast, precis som på alla bärbara speldatorer från MSI i budget- och mellanklassegmentet. Det saknar de lyxiga detaljerna, de blinkande lysdioderna och den mjukare känslan hos modeller i högre prisklass som t.ex MSI GE77 eller Razer Blade 17 för ett mer intetsägande intryck. Detta borde inte vara förvånande eftersom utseendet är en av de första sakerna som får stryka på foten när man skär ner på budget- till mellanklass gamingmodeller.

Chassiets styvhet är tack och lov inte kompromissad. Även om plastytorna känns billigare vid beröring än på en GE-, GS eller GT-modell är de ändå ganska robusta och motståndskraftiga mot vridningar eller nedtryckningar, även ner i tangentbordets mitt eller yttre lock. Det finns inte heller några större problem med knarrande. Gångjärnen kunde dock ha varit styvare i bredare vinklar för en bättre känsla av livslängd.

Systemet är lättare än väntat, särskilt för en bärbar dator för spel på 17,3 tum. Med sina 2,6 kg är den lättare än Razer Blade 17, Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 ochAcer Predator Helios 300 med några hundra gram vardera. Viktfördelen beror sannolikt på den märkbart kortare längden på GL76-chassikonstruktionen. Det är dock en smula bredare, men viktbesparingen kompenserar för det något längre fotavtrycket.

Anslutningsmöjligheter - Begränsade för storleken

Portalternativen är mer begränsade jämfört med andra bärbara datorer för spel i mellanklassen, som t.ex Dell G16, Acer Nitro 5 eller Asus TUF G17. Den viktigaste utelämnandet här är avsaknaden av Thunderbolt-stöd medan alla tre tidigare nämnda alternativ har det. Detta är troligen ett medvetet försök från MSI att uppmuntra användare att överväga de högre stående GE-, GS- eller GT-serierna istället.

DisplayPort-over-USB stöds inte. Vår testenhet skulle inte känna igen någon av våra externa bildskärmar via USB-C.

Kommunikation

En Intel AX201 är standard för Wi-Fi 6 och Bluetooth 5.2. Wi-Fi 6E ingår inte för att spara på kostnaderna, men en uppgradering för slutanvändare är ändå enkel. Prestandan är fortfarande stabil utan några anmärkningsvärda problem när den är kopplad till vår Asus AXE11000-router.

Underhåll

Bottenpanelen är fäst med 13 lätt avtagbara Philips-skruvar. Tänk dock på att en fabriksförsegling måste brytas för att göra detta. MSI fortsätter att vara en av de mycket få stora tillverkarna som har ett fabriksseglingsklistermärke för även enkla uppgraderingar som RAM eller lagring.

Väl inne har användarna direkt tillgång till 2x PCIe4 SSD-platser, 2x SODIMM-platser, WLAN-modul, batteri och kylningslösning.

Tillbehör och garanti

Det finns inga extra tillbehör i förpackningen förutom nätadapter och pappersarbete. En begränsad standardgaranti på ett år gäller om den köps i USA.

Inmatningsenheter - OK tangentbord, svampig klickplatta

Tangentbord

GL76 har samma tangentbord och samma skrivupplevelse som på GL66 trots skillnaderna i formfaktor. Den korta tangentresan och den passabla återkopplingen på GL66 gäller alltså även för GL76. Det är olyckligt att MSI inte utnyttjade den större 17,3-tums formfaktorn bättre genom att öka storleken på numpad- och piltangenterna eftersom de är mindre, svampigare och mer trånga jämfört med de större QWERTY-tangenterna. Denna egenskap delas med Asus TUF Gaming F17.

En RGB-bakgrundsbelysning med en enda zon är standard utan RGB-alternativ per tangent. Alla tangenter och symboler är upplysta.

Pekplatta

Klickplattan är relativt liten, 10,5 x 6,7 cm, men den är åtminstone något större än den 10,5 x 6 cm stora klickplattan på Dell G16. Dess plastyta har en tendens att fastna när den glider i medelhöga eller långsammare hastigheter, vilket kan göra styrningen av markören lite ojämn ibland. Dessutom är återkopplingen när man klickar på ytan svampig, vilket ger en mycket otillfredsställande känsla. Du kommer definitivt att vilja ha en ordentlig extern mus till hands när det är möjligt.

Skärm - endast 1080p

Det finns bara två panelalternativ för 2022 GL76 som anges nedan. 1080p är det enda upplösningsalternativet för tillfället, medan 2021 års modell hade en QHD SKU.

360 Hz-panelen har mycket snabbare svarstider för svartvitt än 144 Hz-panelen. Det är också samma Sharp LQ173M1JW08 IPS-panel som MSI också använder på sitt flaggskepp Titan GT77. Vi rekommenderar att du undviker 144 Hz-alternativet eftersom dess begränsade färgutrymme är en bra indikator på en mycket billig panel.

Bildkvaliteten är utmärkt och smidig på grund av den vansinnigt snabba uppdateringsfrekvensen. Tänk på att den inte är lika skarp som de flesta Ultrabooks eller mindre 15,6-tums bärbara gamingdatorer på grund av den relativt låga PPI-nivån. Just den här panelen prioriterar responsivitet och bildfrekvens framför upplösning.

Skärmen är inte kalibrerad direkt efter leverans. Genomsnittliga DeltaE-värden för gråskala och färg skulle förbättras avsevärt från 6,3 och 4,12 till endast 1,4 respektive 0,98 efter en korrekt kalibrering med en X-Rite-kolorimeter. Vi rekommenderar att man tillämpar vår ICM-profil ovan för att bättre utnyttja panelens fulla sRGB-täckning.

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8715 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Provningsförhållanden

Vi ställde in vår enhet i prestandaläge via Windows och Extreme Performance-läge via MSI Center med dGPU:n aktiv innan vi körde några av prestandabänkningarna nedan. Fläktläget var också inställt på Auto. Användare bör bekanta sig med MSI Center eftersom det är kontrollhubben för MSI-specifika uppdateringar, prestandaprofiler, hårdvaruövervakning med mera, vilket framgår av skärmdumparna nedan.

Det finns inget stöd för Advanced Optimus eller MUX på GL76-serien.

Systembrus

Fläktarna går aldrig på tomgång även när de är inställda på "Silent"-läge. Vi kan registrera minst 26,9 dB(A) mot en tyst bakgrund på 24,1 dB(A), vilket är knappt hörbart i de flesta scenarier. Istället är "Silent"-läget utmärkt för att förhindra att de interna fläktarna pulserar som svar på förändrade belastningar på skärmen. När man t.ex. strömmar videor eller surfar på webben rekommenderas Silent-läget framför Balanced-läget där fläktarna ofta pulserar mellan 27 och 43,8 dB(A).

Fläktljud vid drift Witcher 3 stabiliseras på strax under 45 dB(A) för att vara tystare än många av konkurrenterna, vilket framgår av tabellen nedan. Om Cooler Boost (dvs. läget för maximal fläkt) är aktiverat kan fläktljudet stiga till så mycket som 58 dB(A). Det här läget är mer till för att sänka temperaturen än att öka prestandan och är därför inte nödvändigt för de flesta spelscenarier.

Den genomsnittliga yttemperaturen är inte obehagligt varm och eventuella varma punkter är mycket isolerade tack vare den stora 17,3-tumsformfaktorn och chassit som till största delen består av plast. Tangentbordets mittpunkt kan till exempel nå nästan 50 C när man spelar, medan handflatorna och sidorna av tangentbordet är mycket svalare i mitten av 20 C respektive 30 C. De varma punkterna på ovansidan och undersidan märks sällan när man spelar eftersom hudkontakt är ovanlig på dessa områden.

Stresstest

När Prime95 körs ökar CPU-klockfrekvensen och strömförbrukningen till 4,1 GHz respektive 110 W, vilket varar i bara några sekunder eller tills kärntemperaturen når 95 C. Därefter sjunker klockfrekvensen och strömförbrukningen till 3,6 GHz och 92 W för att slutligen stabiliseras på 3,1-3,6 GHz respektive 85 W. Kärnans temperatur skulle också stabiliseras vid 90 C för att indikera att kylningslösningen i stort sett har nått sin gräns.

Nvidias grafikprocessor skulle stabiliseras vid 1575 MHz och 76 C när den körs på Witcher 3 jämfört med 1725 MHz och 72 C på Razer Blade 17 som är utrustad med en högre 130 W TGP GeForce RTX 3070. GPU-Z på vår MSI-testenhet skulle också indikera en strömförbrukning på 102 W för GPU-kortet, vilket är mycket nära det annonserade målet på 105 W.

Att köra på batteri begränsar prestandan. Ett 3DMark 11-test på batterier skulle ge fysik- och grafikresultat på 9089 respektive 11291 poäng, jämfört med 22513 respektive 33048 poäng när det är på strömförsörjning.

Energihantering - mer energisnålt än väntat

Effektförbrukning

När datorn går på tomgång på skrivbordet förbrukar den bara 12 W i profilen Power Saver med iGPU aktiv och ljusstyrkan inställd på minimum. Omvänt kan tomgångskörning på skrivbordet förbruka drygt 25 W i läget Extreme Performance med ljusstyrkan inställd på maximal nivå. Att växla mellan olika strömlägen är alltså en viktig faktor för att förlänga batteriets livslängd.

Den totala strömförbrukningen är lägre än på de flesta andra bärbara 17,3-tums gamingdatorer. Att köra Witcher 3 skulle till exempel bara förbruka 150 W jämfört med 199 W och 231 W på MSI Vector GP76 respektive Acer Predator Helios 300, båda med RTX 3070 Ti GPU. Förbrukningen är också betydligt lägre än på Alienware m17 R5 med Radeon RX 6850M XT-drift, samtidigt som den erbjuder nästan samma råa grafikprestanda.

Vi kan mäta ett maximalt uttag på 241 W från den medelstora (~16,4 x 7,4 x 2,5 cm) 240 W AC-adaptern när CPU:n och GPU:n är 100 procent utnyttjade vardera. Den här hastigheten är endast tillfällig som framgår av skärmdumparna nedan på grund av CPU:ns begränsade Turbo Boost-potential. Batteriet kan fortfarande laddas i en hyfsad takt när man kör hög belastning som spel.

Batteritid - 99 Wh Li-Ion-paket

Intressant nog finns de officiella MSI-specifikationerna på https://us.msi.com/Laptop/Pulse-GL76-12UX/Specification anger ett batteripaket på 53 Wh för GL76, medan en närmare titt på HWiNFO och det fysiska batteripaketet i vår testenhet visar en kapacitet på 90 Wh. Diskrepansen är sannolikt ett misstag från tillverkarens sida. Trots detta är batteritiden bra för en bärbar dator för spel. Vi kan registrera en WLAN-körtid på strax under 6 timmar, vilket är ungefär 2 timmar längre än på Razer Blade 17 eller Asus ROG Strix Scar 17.

Att ladda från tom till full kapacitet tar drygt 2 timmar. USB-PD stöds inte och därför kan systemet endast laddas med den medföljande nätadaptern av tunntyp.

Pulse GL76 är perfekt när det gäller pris, prestanda och skärm. Core i7-12700H passar bra ihop med GeForce RTX 3070 medan 360 Hz 1080p-panelen är samma panel som MSI använder för sina mycket dyrare GT77 Titan. För 1 400 USD eller till och med 1 200 USD om den är på rea, skulle det vara svårt att hitta en annan bärbar 17,3-tums gamingdator med en bättre CPU, GPU och skärm än vår GL76.

När du tittar bortom processorer och skärm börjar dock de skurna hörnen att synas. Särskilt avsaknaden av G-Sync, MUX, Advanced Optimus och Thunderbolt-stöd sätter verkligen käppar i hjulet för ett annars kraftfullt system. Alternativ som Asus TUF Gaming F17 eller Acer Predator Helios 300 har många av dessa saknade funktioner som avancerade användare eller spelare kan uppskatta. Vi förväntar oss inte att bärbara speldatorer för budgetpriset ska ha så moderna funktioner, men GL76 kostar långt över 1 000 USD och förtjänar åtminstone några av dem.

MSI Pulse GL76 prioriterar rå Intel- och Nvidia-prestanda tillsammans med en högkvalitativ 360 Hz IPS-skärm. Några avancerade funktioner saknas sannolikt för att hålla kostnaderna i schack.

Andra nackdelar som den svampiga klickplattan, den leriga webbkameran, de genomsnittliga gångjärnen, den mestadels plastiga designen och bristen på RGB-belysning per tangent är oftast typiska för bärbara datorer för spel i mellanklassen och är inte något som bryter affären. Spelare som vill maximera prestanda och bildskärmskvalitet utan att bryta banken bör ändå överväga GL76.

Pris och tillgänglighet

Pulse GL76 som konfigurerad finns för närvarande på Costco för 1200-1400 USD. Modellen finns också på Amazon för 1650 USD, Newegg för 1 750 USD eller Best Buy för 1 700 USD.
