SCHENKER XMG Core 15 (M24) recension av bärbar dator: En premium, metallhöljd spelmaskin från Tyskland

En mer prisvärd Fusion 15. Den nya XMG Core 15 är inrymd i samma premium och eleganta metallhölje som XMG Focus 15. Det gör den potentiellt intressant för kreatörer samtidigt som den kostar en hel del mindre än Fusion. Vi undersöker var Schenker har skurit ner på kostnaderna och om nya Core 15 är ett bra tips för prismedvetna kreatörer och gamers.

Enligt Schenker är den nuvarande Core 15 en något nedbantad Fusion 15. Fördelen är ett betydligt billigare pris, men trots detta behåller Core 15 sitt eleganta metallhölje som ger den ett bra utseende och känsla. Tillverkaren kallar den "Undercover Gaming" eftersom aluminiumfodralet också borde tilltala skapare utan att nödvändigtvis skrika spelbärbar dator.

Core 15 är dock inte bara nedbantad, den ändrar också en del saker. Till exempel är den bärbara datorns processor en AMD Ryzen av den nuvarande generationen istället för en Intel Gen14 HX CPU, vilket sänker priset något men är inte på något sätt sämre.

Eftersom det inte längre finns några 15-tums bärbara datorer som är utrustade med en aktuell CPU, jämför vi 15,3-tums Core 15 med 16-tums bärbara gaming- och multimediadatorer som levereras med en RTX 4060 som till exempel Dell G16och Lenovo Legion 5i 16 G9såväl som HP Victus 16. Dessutom har vi naturligtvis gjort jämförelser med Fusion 15 och även tagit en titt på vad som har förändrats sedan förra årets Schenker XMG Pro 15 E23.

Se upp för detta: Vårt nya betygssystem är V8 vilket innebär att poängen nu är lägre. Med det gamla V7-betygssystemet V7 fick Core 15 mellan 88 och 89 procent. Du kan ta reda på vad som är nytt här.

Fodral och funktioner: Ett elegant aluminiumfodral

Eftersom vi redan har testat de visuella funktionerna i stor utsträckning hänvisar vi dig till vår XMG Fusion 15 recension för ytterligare information om höljet, underhåll, portar och inmatningsenheter. Här kommer vi bara att lista ändringarna i dessa aspekter.

Jämförelse av storlek

För närvarande verkar 15-tums gamingmaskiner med en aktuell CPU nästan ha dött ut och en av Core 15:s unika egenskaper är dess ovanliga 15,3-tumsformat. Tillverkaren hävdar att dagens 16-tums bärbara datorer knappast är större, vilket innebär att du nu kan få en större skärm i nästan samma storlek.

Men med Core 15 kan du se att några av 16-tums konkurrenterna är märkbart större. Utöver det är de också tjockare och tyngre. Det sistnämnda är fallet trots att konkurrenterna använder betydligt mer plast. Det här är ett område där Core 15 får pluspoäng för sin mobilitet.

Portar

Till skillnad från Fusion som är utrustad med Intel-processorer saknar AMD Core Thunderbolt 4 och USB 4. Istället får du bara USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 även om den erbjuder Power Delivery på upp till 100 W (20V, 5 A).

Det finns ytterligare en fördel jämfört med Fusion: Med Core får du en dedikerad mini DisplayPort som inte finns i Fusion.

En intressant sidoanteckning: I början av 2023 kommer vår nyligen granskade Core 15 fortfarande utrustad med en vattenanslutning för extern kylning som gick under namnet XMG Oasis. Dessa portar saknas nu i den nyare och tunnare Core 15 och det verkar som om XMG har gett upp att experimentera med denna produktionsserie.

Kommunikation

Tillverkaren informerade oss efter att ha mottagit den bärbara datorn att vår testmodell av misstag var utrustad med en Intel AX211 WiF, precis som Fusion 15. Detta är faktiskt inte fallet med Core 15.

Normalt sett är Intel AX200 standard i Core 15 och för endast 15 dollar extra får du AMD Wi-Fi 6E RZ616 med Wi-Fi 6E. Vi kan dock för närvarande inte testa dess hastighet.

Inmatningsenheter - Utrymmet utnyttjas maximalt

Till skillnad från Fusion 15 har Core 15 ingen individuell RGB-tangentbelysning. Istället har den bara en belysningszon. Även om det inte tillåter lika många valfria LED-inställningar är allt fortfarande synligt.

Tangentbordet saknar också N key rollover samt anti-ghosting, åtminstone enligt databladet. Ändå finns tangenten med vilken du kan växla prestandaprofiler ombord.

Core använder samma panel som Fusion. Även om vi uppmätte betydligt högre ljusstyrka (600 vs. 460 nits) så sker det på bekostnad av svartnivån och kontrasten blir lidande som ett resultat av detta.

Vid lägsta ljusstyrka är skärmens bakgrundsbelysning också för ljus, men den är fortfarande ganska jämnt upplyst.

Vid cirka 45 procent ljusstyrka (150 nits) uppmätte vi 150 nits. Med en mörkare skärm är färgprecisionen och, självklart, svartnivån båda en aning bättre

Tyvärr finns det inga alternativa skärmalternativ, men skärmen är ljusstark, har tillräckligt snabba svarstider, ingen PWM och inte heller märks det av någon "backlight bleeding".

Färgprecision

Panelen är hyfsat kalibrerad från början, med DeltaE-värden som är lägre än 3. Trots detta är svartvärdet betydligt för högt. En sänkning av ljusstyrkan till 150 nits förbättrar inte bara situationen utan pressar även ner DeltaE-värdena något.

Manuell kalibrering med maximal ljusstyrka gör underverk trots de redan hyfsade värdena och lyckas märkbart minimera avvikelserna. Panelen kan därför kalibreras mycket bra och detta leder till mycket god färgåtergivning, åtminstone i sRGB. Vid maximal ljusstyrka fortsätter det svarta värdet att vara för högt och detta gör att kontrasten blir lidande.

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Den höga ljusstyrkan och den matta skärmen gör att du inte kommer att ha några problem med att använda enheten i skuggan och innehållet förblir mycket läsbart. Kontrasten skulle dock kunna vara lite högre och du bör undvika direkt solljus.

Prestanda - 20 % långsammare än Fusion med HX och RTX 4070

Med den nya Ryzen 7 8845HS, RTX 4060 och 32 GB RAM positionerar sig XMG Core 15 som en bärbar speldator i mellanklassen och marknadsförs också som en sådan. Det svarta, relativt tunna, snygga och helt i aluminium tillverkade höljet ger den bärbara datorn ett diskret utseende som också kan göra den intressant för innehållsskapare. Det gör det desto mer beklagligt att Schenker inte erbjuder några ytterligare visningsalternativ eftersom den välkalibrerade skärmen "bara" kan visa sRGB. Detta kan vara ett onödigt avgörande kriterium för foto- och framför allt videoredigerare. Därför skulle vi också vilja se DisplayP3-alternativ i framtiden.

Testförhållanden

I det generiska kontrollcentret (Tulpar använder t.ex. samma CC) erbjuds 3 förinställda prestandaprofiler (Balanced, Enthusiast, Overboost) och en manuell profil. I den senare kan en fläktboost aktiveras och CPU-måltemperatur, fläktkurvor (med mera) kan definieras. Under allmänna inställningar via MUX kan GPU:n växlas från hybrid till dGPU, vilket kräver en omstart.

För våra prestandabänkmärken valde vi Overboost-läget och i batteritestet använde vi Balanced. Vi presenterar även prestandavärdena för de andra lägena.

Alla Core 15 SKU:er är utrustade med samma processor. Den nya AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS är den näst snabbaste processorn i Hawk Point-serien med Zen 4-arkitektur. Den har 8 kärnor och hyperthreading vilket innebär att den kan bearbeta 16 trådar samtidigt. Kärnorna har en basklockhastighet på 3,8 GHz och kan individuellt överklockas upp till 5,1 GHz.

I det kontinuerliga testet Cinebench R15 presterade vår AMD Core 15 mycket konsekvent men mestadels på en nivå något under de bärbara datorer som är utrustade med en Intel Gen14 HX CPU. Det är egentligen inte förvånande eftersom AMD-processorn bara kortvarigt drar maximalt 90 W och 80 W under en längre period. Med Intel-processorn i Fusion 15 är dessa värden 140 W och 105 W. Endast Dell G16 sjunker under Ryzen 7:s konsekventa prestandanivå som ses i Core efter en bättre startprestanda.

I alla CPU-tester är vår Ryzen 7 helt i linje med målet. Tyvärr tar dock vår Core sista platsen igen eftersom dess Intel HX-konkurrenter helt enkelt är lite mer kraftfulla. Ändå är klyftan bakom Dell G16 eller HP Victus 16 verkligen minimal. Legion 5i eller den Intel-drivna Fusion 15 har en betydande fördel.

Bort från väggen finns det en prestandadipp på cirka 35 procent i Cinebench R15 multi-core-testet.

Masslagring

I vår testmodell har Schenker monterat en snabb Samsung 990 Pro med 1 TB lagringsutrymme och Core 15 kan utrustas med SSD-enheter från sex olika företag, inklusive olika modeller från den här tillverkaren.

Beroende på vilken testprogramvara som används (CrystalDiskMark 6, AS SSD, Disksdp) gör SSD-enheten bättre eller sämre ifrån sig, men på det hela taget är 990 Pro fortfarande en mycket snabb PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD som också visade mycket konsekventa höga prestandanivåer i vår testmodell som körde Diskspd-loopen.

En Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060 fungerar som GPU, men för ytterligare $ 200 kommer Core 15 också med en RTX 4070 som den i Fusion 15.

I 3DMark-testerna gör Core 15 exceptionellt bra ifrån sig. Över alla tester har även den RTX 4070-utrustade Fusion endast en 8-procentig fördel med Core 15 som ligger tätt bakom på andra plats, framför den 4060-baserade konkurrensen.

Spelprestandan är inte riktigt lika bra som 3DMark-resultaten, men det beror helt på de CPU-intensiva titlarna som DOTA 2 Reborn eller X-Plane. Bortsett från dessa titlar, när det gäller CPU-intensiva spel, ser Core 15 öga mot öga med de bästa RTX 4060-jämförelseenheterna. Den senare kör alla titlar i Full HD med över 60 fps och uppvisar inte ens några problem i sin ursprungliga QHD-upplösning, även om titlar som Cyberpunk 2077 ibland sjunker under 60 fps-gränsen.

Grafen på Witcher 3 visar mycket stabil prestanda under mer än en timme med spelets vanliga dag/natt-rytm. Inom detta område är prestandan också på samma nivå som RTX 4060-konkurrenterna. Tabellen nedan visar poängen för de olika prestandaprofilerna, där den enda inkonsekvensen återfinns i det balanserade läget. Under de första minuterna visar det samma prestanda som i entusiastläget med bildfrekvens och förbrukning som sedan sjunker kort och bara lyckas ligga på batterilägesnivå.

I batteriläget sjunker 3D-prestandan på Fire Strike med cirka 39 procent.

Bullerutsläpp

När datorn körs i viloläge på skrivbordet är fläktarna mestadels inaktiva. Men vid minsta lilla belastning i vardagen, t.ex. när du öppnar en webbläsare och surfar på nätet, aktiveras de och brummar på med en tyst ljudnivå på 27 dB. Detta är normalt den typ av volym som du kommer att ha att göra med.

Under tung belastning kan fläktvolymen öka till upp till 52 dB, men när belastningsperioden är över lugnar de ner sig mycket snabbt igen. Men sedan är det inte tyst igen på ett bra tag, inte ens vid tomgångskörning.

Som jämförelse är både HP Victus och Dell G16 lite tystare när de spelar, och med Legion 5 som blir allt mer högljudd ligger Core 15 någonstans mitt emellan de båda enheterna.

Temperatur

Core 15 förblir inte riktigt sval, utan metallhöljet värms upp ganska mycket och blir en extra värmekälla, särskilt på enhetens undersida. Handledsstöden förblir jämförelsevis svala.

Även vid tomgångskörning med avstängda fläktar, runt 35 °C, blir den ganska varm men inom rimliga gränser. När du spelar värms hotspot-området på enhetens bas, mitt för skärmen, upp till 55 °C och når strax över 60 °C i stresstestet. Det är i det här området som konkurrenterna lyckas hålla sig ganska mycket svalare, till och med Fusion 15 med sin kraftfullare GPU. Detta kan också ha en inverkan på RTX 4070-konfigurationen och resultera i möjlig termisk strypning.

Core 15 är något mer ekonomisk än konkurrenterna, särskilt vid tomgångskörning - allt mycket bra. Förbrukningen förblir också måttlig när du spelar.

I stresstestet uppmätte vi tillfälligt förbrukningsvärden på upp till 286 W, vilket teoretiskt sett skulle kunna överväldiga 240 W PSU något. Ändå är dessa belastningstoppar verkligen bara tillfälliga. När vi spelade uppmätte vi en genomsnittlig förbrukning på endast 167 W och det är något som nätaggregatet borde kunna hantera hela tiden.

På tal om PSU:n verkar Schenker ha gjort förbättringar här genom att krympa dess dimensioner. Istället för Chicony PSU på 240 W har tillverkaren också valt en 240 W-enhet men i en betydligt mindre formfaktor. Detta är mycket fördelaktigt för mobiliteten.

Batteriets livslängd

Som standard har Schenker installerat ett 80 Wh-batteri. Men för en extra kostnad på cirka 70 USD kan enheten konfigureras med ett större 99,8 Wh-batteri, vilket är det som finns i vår testmodell.

Core 15 håller igång i cirka 7 timmar antingen i Wi-Fi- eller videotestet med 150 Nits reducerad ljusstyrka. Om du ställer in ljusstyrkan på max slocknar lamporna efter mindre än 5 timmar i Wi-Fi-testet. Sammantaget har vi att göra med en mycket bra batteritid här, även om Legion verkar kunna leverera liknande prestanda med ett 80 Wh-batteri.

Core 15 kostar minst 200 dollar mindre än Fusion 15. Detta kommer på bekostnad av att behöva göra utan Thunderbolt och en kraftfullare CPU. Det senare resulterar i en märkbar skillnad i CPU-prestanda på nästan 20 procent. Detta är dock inte något du verkligen kommer att märka i de flesta 3D-spel. Fusion kan vara 20 procent snabbare inom detta område men det beror på dess RTX 4070. RTX 4060-varianten borde vara lika snabb.

Vi gillade Core-hantverket med dess metallhölje samt bra utbyggnadsalternativ när det gäller RAM-minne och SSD-enheter. Tangentbordet, 3D-prestanda och batteritid är också anständiga.

Den "enda" kritiken är den stora mängden värme som produceras på basens metallyta under tung belastning. Det här är ett område där tillverkaren bör göra framtida förbättringar och kanske optimera kylsystemet.

XMG Core 15 är en potent 3D-spelare med bra byggkvalitet som inkluderar ett metallhölje som blir något för varmt under belastning.

Ett alternativ som är värt att ta en titt på är förra årets XMG Pro 15. Förra årets HX CPU är fortfarande snabbare än AMD-processorn som finns här och dessutom har Pro också Thunderbolt 4. Legion 5i är också ett möjligt alternativ, särskilt i sin billigare Campuspoint-variant.

Pris och tillgänglighet

I Schenkers butik i Tyskland börjar priserna för Core 15 på cirka 1 500 USD (aktuell omräkningskurs). På grund av det större batteriet, Wi-Fi 6E, mer RAM och Samsung 990 Pro SSD kostar vår testmodell cirka 1 700 USD. Priserna för Fusion 15 börjar däremot på cirka 1 600 dollar.
