Dell delar på ett smart sätt upp sin Alienware 17-serie i två väldigt olika versioner: Alienware m17 och Alienware Area-51m. Även om den tunnare m17 saknar en del funktioner jämfört med den ursprungliga 17-serien så har den större och fullmatade Area-51m tagit över på den punkten. Den en gång så klumpiga Alienware-serien på 17 tum kan nu tilltala gamers som föredrar smidigare och tunnare laptops såväl som gamers som vill ha så mycket kraft som möjligt i laptop-format.
Eftersom m17 i princip är en "Alienware 17 lite" så kommer dock fans av originalserien sörja faktum att den offrar en handful klassiska Alienware-funktioner till förmån för att kunna vara tunnare och lättare. Den lyckas ändå inte bli i närheten så tunn eller lätt som de senaste modellerna från MSI, Asus eller Acer, så m17 är mer av ett mellanting mellan ultratunn och tjock och tung. Å andra sidan gör det extra omfånget m17:s chassi svårare att böja jämfört med många av de supertunna alternativen, särskilt när det gäller locket.
Våra största klagomål rör kärntemperaturerna, fläktljudet och tangentbordet. Att den når kärntemperaturer på 98 C när man spelar trots att fläktarna snurrar som ljudligast kan för många bli svårt att svälja. Samtidigt hade den mjuka tangentåterkopplingen känts mer lämplig på en tunn Ultrabook snarare än på en spellaptop för entusiaster som m17. SteelSeries-tangentbordet som finns på bärbara datorer från MSI och Clevo har fastare tangentåterkoppling, vilket ger en tightare spelupplevelse. Det snedslipade tangentbordet som finns på både Area-51m och äldre modeller av Alienware 17 känns också bättre när man spelar.
Alienware m17 gör stora besparingar när det gäller vikt och storlek jämfört med Alienware 17. Nackdelarna märks dock och inkluderar avsaknaden av många hårdvarufunktioner och ett byte till Max-Q grafikkort. Som tur är kan den som önskar en mer klassisk Alienware-upplevelse välja Area-51m medans de som inte prövat det här märket innan kommer att uppskatta m17 för att den har en stark chassidesign jämfört med andra ultratunna alternativ.
