Snabb allroundspelare. Efter att Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 i Zenbook S16 bara uppfyllde sin prestandapotential i begränsad utsträckning vågar vi försöka igen genom att ta en titt på VivoBook S 14. I och med detta väcks också frågan om Radeon 890M iGPU kan komma i närheten av Intel Arc 8.

Fallet

Som med de flesta bärbara datorer från Asus ser VivoBook S 14 ganska snygg ut överlag. Dess silverfärgade ytor drar till sig jämförelsevis mindre smuts än enheter med svart finish. Medan locket är tillverkat av metall, har basenheten konstruerats med plast. Byggkvaliteten ger oss ingen anledning att klaga.

I likhet med många andra (tunna) bärbara datorer är det bara stabiliteten som skulle kunna vara lite bättre - det gäller lockets vridstyvhet eller hur basenheten beter sig när man trycker på den (särskilt i pekplattans område). Den får pluspoäng för sin generösa öppningsvinkel på 180°. Gångjärnet gör ett bra jobb (du kan öppna den bärbara datorn med en hand), även om vibrationer endast absorberas i begränsad utsträckning och resulterar i att skärmen vickar lite.

Den bärbara datorns anslutningsmöjligheter är i allmänhet bra. Även om den inte har en RJ45-port finns allt annat ombord som du kan förvänta dig att se på en aktuell allround-laptop. Detta inkluderar en HDMI 2.1-port, två USB-C-portar med DisplayPort-stöd och Power Delivery (1x 4.0, 1x 3.2 Gen 1), en microSD-kortläsare och ett 3,5-mm-uttag på vänster sida. På höger sida finns endast två USB-A-portar som uppfyller 3.2 Gen 1-standarden.

Eftersom de flesta anslutningarna sitter på baksidan av chassit kan du använda en mus utan problem eller begränsningar.

Underhåll

Asus skulle kunna göra det lite enklare att utföra underhåll på den här enheten. En av de 11 chassiskruvarna (Torx) är gömd under ett lock som är ganska svårt att ta bort. Bortsett från detta kan det nedre höljet tas bort ganska enkelt från sin förankring. Vi har några negativa saker att notera om insidan av fodralet: För det första är RAM-minnet och WLAN-modulen fastlödda och för det andra finns det bara en enda M.2-plats.

Hållbarhet

Asus förlitar sig främst på kartong när det gäller den bärbara datorns förpackning. Den skyddas av en tyginsats och en tygpåse (var och en märkt). En plastfilm används endast för strömförsörjningsenheten. Vi kunde inte hitta någon information om enhetensCO2-fotavtryck och fodralets återvinningsstatus.

I USA omfattas den bärbara datorn av en standardgaranti på 12 månader.

Tangentbord

Överlag är tangentbordet ganska bra. Även om vissa layoutbeslut kan vara lite tveksamma (ingen separat strömbrytare, små riktningspilar, ...) - men så är fallet på de flesta bärbara datorer - och återkopplingen kan göra med att vara lite mer skarp i våra ögon, fungerar det bra bortsett från detta. Asus har gett sin VivoBook S 14 RGB-bakgrundsbelysning med en zon som kan justeras i flera nivåer. Specialfunktioner utlöses som standard utan att trycka på Fn-tangenten, vilket kan ändras om det behövs.

Pekplatta

Tillverkaren har tagit fram några trevliga funktioner för den bärbara datorns pekplatta. Till exempel kan du enkelt justera volymen med en svepande gest på vänster sida, medan höger sida används för att kontrollera skärmens ljusstyrka. Den överraskande stora klickplattan för en 14-tums bärbar dator (ca 13 x 8,5 cm) känns också bra och smidig vid användning. Klickytorna ger hyfsad feedback men låter också lite skramliga när de aktiveras.

Display

OLED-fans som inte irriteras av reflekterande ytor kommer att bli helt nöjda med VivoBook S 14. Den HDR-klara 14-tumspanelen uppnår stora kontraster tack vare sitt OLED-typiska låga svartvärde.

Samtidigt är ljusstyrkan bara precis tillräcklig. Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Testförhållanden

Du kan välja mellan fyra olika driftlägen med hjälp av den förinstallerade MyAsus-appen. Processor

Jämfört med Zenbook S16, som vi också testade med standardprofilen, klarade sig VivoBook S 14 mycket bättre i benchmarks trots identisk processor. Det är inte så konstigt, eftersom den här modellens CPU har tillgång till en mer generös TDP (54 watt istället för 28 watt PL1). CPU-betyget intygar 10 % högre prestanda för VivoBook. Detta blev också tydligt synligt i Cinebench-loopen, även om prestandan tyvärr inte kunde hållas helt konstant i det långa loppet.

Trots detta slog HX 370 processorerna i alla andra konkurrerande bärbara datorer - vare sig det var Core Ultra 7 155H eller Ryzen 7 8840HS eller 8845HS. Tekniskt sett har Zen 5-avknoppningen, som tillverkas med 4 nm-processen, 12 kärnor och kan bearbeta upp till 24 trådar parallellt via SMT.

Bullerutsläpp

Bortsett från det faktum att ljudnivån ibland har en ganska hög frekvens, levererar den bärbara datorns fläktar och fläktkontroll en solid prestanda - åtminstone i visk- eller standardläge. Temperatur

En av de få svagheterna hos VivoBook 14 är dess suboptimala temperaturer. Även om handledsstödet alltid håller sig inom ett rimligt intervall (även under full belastning), värms den bakre tredjedelen av höljets botten upp till nästan 60 °C i extrema fall, vilket inte bådar gott för att ställa den i knät. Den bärbara 14-tumsdatorn tenderar också att bli varmare än de flesta av sina konkurrenter i viloläge, även om alla värden vi mätte höll sig inom det gröna området.

Vår ljudanalys bekräftade att VivoBook S 14 har ett ganska anständigt ljud. Förutom sin maximala volym kunde basen också vara lite starkare. Lenovo Yoga Pro 7, till exempel, ligger klart före när det gäller ljud.

Strömförbrukning

Mätningarna av den bärbara datorns strömförbrukning avslöjade inga särskilda avvikelser. Även om 14-tumsenheten förbrukade lite mer än konkurrenterna i nästan alla scenarier, lyckades VivoBook också med den bästa övergripande prestandan. Den medföljande 90-watts strömförsörjningen verkar vara tillräckligt stor.

Körtider

En mycket positiv överraskning var dess batteritid. Ryzen AI 9 är superenergieffektiv utan strömförsörjningsenhet. Nästan 32 timmar under idealiska förhållanden (minimal ljusstyrka, Wi-Fi avstängt, praktiskt taget ingen belastning) är lika enastående som cirka 16,5 timmar när man surfar trådlöst med ljusstyrkan reducerad till 150 cd/m². Alla konkurrenter kan bara drömma om dessa värden - trots jämförelsevis stora batterier.

Under vårt test visade sig Asus VivoBook S 14 OLED vara en snabb och nästan helt lyckad allrounddator som knappt tillät sig några misstag.

Den snabba Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 presterar redan mer än tillräckligt bra i standardläge och kan åtminstone komma ikapp Intels Core Ultra-konkurrens (särskilt när det gäller CPU-prestanda). Dessutom är den integrerade Radeon 890M ett bra alternativ för casual gamers som inte nödvändigtvis behöver spela varje nytt spel med maximala inställningar.

Bortsett från några mindre detaljer är resten av den bärbara datorn också imponerande. Det snygga höljet är bekvämt lätt och kompakt, och det ger användarna ett stort antal portar att välja mellan. Till detta kommer bra inmatningsenheter samt en kontrastrik och levande OLED-panel - vars glänsande yta tyvärr har sina egna nackdelar (starka reflektioner).

Verkligen imponerande drifttider är VivoBook S 14:s främsta höjdpunkt, vilket bidrar till att göra den bärbara datorn till en utmärkt bärbar följeslagare.

Sammantaget är den 14-tums bärbara datorn ungefär i nivå med Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14som är utrustad med en Core Ultra 7 155H och har ett liknande pris. För att få ett ännu högre betyg skulle VivoBook S 14 OLEDs höljetemperaturer behöva vara lägre och dess underhålls- och uppgraderingsalternativ skulle behöva vara bättre (soldered-on RAM, endast en M.2-plats).
