HP EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 recension av bärbar dator: Höga förväntningar på Windows on ARM

Vår dag 0 Windows ARM benchmarking erfarenhet. Microsoft satsar stort på Windows ARM ännu en gång men den här gången med en ny tjusig AI-driven Snapdragon-processor från Qualcomm. Även om det är ganska bra i vissa avseenden har det nya chipet problem med att hålla jämna steg med det senaste från Intel, AMD och Apple i vissa viktiga områden.

HP EliteBook Ultra G1p 14 var en av många bärbara datormodeller som presenterades på Microsofts Surface-event i Seattle förra månaden. Tillkännagivandet var särskilt viktigt eftersom det skulle markera början på företagets tredje försök att föra Windows till ARM-plattformar. Den här gången har Windows-tillverkaren dock stöd av Qualcomms AI-klara Snapdragon-processor och stora tillverkare som HP, Dell, Lenovo och Asus för att driva plattformen framåt.

Vår granskningsenhet idag är den affärsorienterade EliteBook Ultra G1p 14 med Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 SoC, 16 GB LPDDR5x-8400 lödd RAM och 512 GB SSD för $ 1700 i detaljhandeln. Inga andra SKU: er är tillgängliga i skrivande stund. En relaterad men separat HP-modell som heter OmniBook X 14 kommer med mycket liknande specifikationer för $ 500 mindre i en mer konsumentorienterad design.

Fodral - ansvarsfullt tillverkat av återvunnet aluminium och plast

EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 må ha en snygg ny ARM-processor, men dess skal verkar vara starkt inspirerat av förra årets AMD-drivna Dragonfly Pro. Allt från chassifärg, tangentbordslayout, gångjärnsdesign och visuella detaljer påminner mer om 14-tums Dragonfly-serien än 14-tums EliteBook 1040 serien. Detta innebär att Qualcomm-maskinen känns lika premium trots den superlätta och tunna designen.

Tyvärr är de små gångjärnen den svagaste aspekten av ett annars styvt chassi. Vi noterade detta i vår Dragonfly Pro-recension också och det är lite nedslående att se samma problem på EliteBook Ultra G1q 14. Gångjärnsstyvheten är helt enkelt inte särskilt styv i bredare vinklar och locket tenderar att vackla ganska märkbart när man justerar vinklarna. Vi får en bättre känsla av livslängd från de stramare gångjärnen på Dell Latitude 9450 serien i jämförelse.

Storlek och vikt är höjdpunkter i EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 eftersom modellen är märkbart tunnare och lättare än många av sina konkurrenter, inklusive Latitude 9450 2-i-1, XPS 14 9440eller MacBook Pro 14. Användare kan dock fortfarande välja en ännu lättare modell genom att välja ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 eller LG Gram 14 och därför är vår Qualcomm-baserade maskin inte nödvändigtvis den lättaste som finns.

Anslutningsmöjligheter

Systemet har en USB-A-port, vilket de flesta andra 14-tums subnotebooks inte har, inte ens HP:s egen Dragonfly-serie. USB4 stöds tack och lov för kompatibilitet med ett bredare utbud av dockningsstationer och bildskärmar.

Det finns inget Kensington-lås till skillnad från Latitude 9440 2-i-1 eller ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12.

Underhåll

Bottenpanelen sitter fast med endast fyra Torx-skruvar för relativt enkel service. Uppgraderingsmöjligheterna är dock begränsade till M.2 2280 PCIe4 SSD-kortplatsen och M.2 WLAN-modulen eftersom RAM-minnet är lödd. Kyldesignen med en fläkt liknar de flesta andra EliteBook-modeller som EliteBook 845, medan Dragonfly-modellerna vanligtvis använder dubbla fläktdesigner.

Tillbehör och garanti

Det finns inga extra tillbehör i förpackningen förutom nätadapter och papper. Ett skyddsfodral hade varit trevligt att se med tanke på det begärda priset för modellen.

En treårig tillverkargaranti ingår som standard tillsammans med ett års programvaruskydd HP Wolf Security Pro. Den längre basgarantin är en viktig skillnad mellan den konsumentinriktade OmniBook X 14 och den affärsinriktade EliteBook Ultra G1q 14.

Tangentbord

Tangentbordets layout är mer lik Dragonfly Pro än EliteBook 845 särskilt när det gäller tangentstorlek och teckensnitt. Resan känns mycket grund, inklusive tangenterna Space och Enter som skulle ha kunnat dra nytta av starkare återkoppling.

Alla tangenter och symboler blir upplysta när bakgrundsbelysningen är aktiv.

Pekplatta

Ytan är något bredare än på Dragonfly Pro Dragonfly Pro (12,5 x 8 cm jämfört med 12,0 x 8 cm) för att vara ännu rymligare för bekväma multi-touch-ingångar. Dragkraften är jämn med endast lite klibbighet när du glider i lägre hastigheter för bättre precision. Återkopplingen när du trycker ner på ytan är också skarpare, fastare och högre än på XPS- eller Lenovo IdeaPad-serien. Det här är en av de mer tillfredsställande och pålitliga styrplattorna som finns, åtminstone om man bortser från styrplattor med dedikerade knappar.

Skärm - Standard 60 Hz IPS

Hur speciell processorn än må vara så är pekskärmen ganska ordinär. IPS-panelen erbjuder fulla sRGB-färger, sub-QHD-upplösning och snabbare svartvita och grågrå svarstider än 14-tumspanelen på Dragonfly Pro. I övrigt saknar den funktioner som finns på mer avancerade paneler som HDR-stöd, högre uppdateringsfrekvenser och Windows VRR.

De genomsnittliga deltaE-värdena för gråskala och färg kunde ha varit bättre, 8,8 respektive 5,63, vilket tyder på att systemet inte är förkalibrerat från fabrik. Färgtemperaturen är i synnerhet lite för varm med ~6000K. Kalibrering kan också visa sig vara svårt eftersom kolorimeterprogramvara som i1Profiler kanske inte fungerar korrekt.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17594 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Den maximala ljusstyrkan på 350 till 400 nits är svagare än Macbook Pro 14 eller EliteBook 830 där ljusstyrkan kan nå 600 nits respektive 1000 nits. Medan ~350 nits är bra för inomhusmiljöer, kommer belysning och förhållanden utomhus att överväldiga EliteBook Ultra-skärmen.

Prestanda - Bra från start, men inte tillräckligt bra

Testförhållanden

Vi ställde in Windows i prestandaläge innan vi körde nedanstående benchmarks. Många av benchmarksen måste emuleras för att kunna köras, inklusive 3DMark, vilket kan försvåra direkta jämförelser med Intel- eller AMD-chip.

Processor

Den råa flerkärniga prestandan är i klass med konkurrerande Core Ultra 7 165U i bästa fall medan den ligger cirka 15 till 20 procent bakom Ryzen 7 7840U eller 8840U. Resultaten blir ännu sämre för enkärniga operationer där våra Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 kan vara upp till 35 till 40 procent långsammare än de tidigare nämnda Intel- och AMD-alternativen. Liknande resultat kan hittas när man jämför Qualcomm-chipet med Apple M2 serien eller nyare.

Prestanda sjunker över tid när det stressas eftersom höga klockfrekvenser är ohållbara under långa perioder. Även om detta inte är ovanligt, är nedgången i prestanda brantare jämfört med många Core-U- eller Ryzen-U-alternativ. När man kör CineBench R15 xT i en loop, till exempel, skulle den ursprungliga poängen på 2175 poäng sjunka med 27 procent efter sex loopar jämfört med bara 12 procent på förra årets AMD-drivna Dragonfly Pro. Vi misstänker att detta beror på den mindre kylningslösningen i EliteBook Ultra G1q-designen eftersom den större Vivobook S 15 OLED med samma Qualcomm-processor kan konsekvent upprätthålla högre poäng under liknande testförhållanden.

Systemets prestanda

Naturligtvis skulle flera av våra vanliga benchmarkapplikationer inte fungera i en ARM-miljö, vilket är väntat:

  1. Far Cry 5: Misslyckas med att starta
  2. X-Plane: Endast låga inställningar; Kraschar på medelhöga och höga inställningar
  3. Baldur's Gate 3: Går inte att starta i DX12-läge
  4. HWiNFO64: ARM-version kommer snart
  5. i1Profiler: Känner inte igen kolorimeter
  6. LatencyMon: Ingen ARM-version
  7. 3DMark06: SysInfo-fel; Kan kringgås
  8. Geekbench 6.2: Går inte att starta

Det är värt att nämna att majoriteten av ovanstående applikationer är för benchmarking-ändamål som de flesta köpare inte kommer att köra. Dagliga produktivitetsapplikationer som webbläsare, videospelare och Microsoft Office körs utan problem.

PCMark 10 Standard är inte heller kompatibelt med ARM och därför körde vi PCMark 10 Applications istället. Våra poäng i tabellen ovan skulle vara högre än vad vi registrerade på Latitude 7350 utrustad med Core Ultra 5 135U, vilket tyder på att Qualcomm-maskinen är mer jämförbar med Core Ultra 7-serien snarare än en lägre SKU när det gäller dag-till-dag-applikationer.

Intressant nog var WebXPRT- och Kraken-resultaten mycket lägre på vårt HP- än på vårt Asus-system trots att vi körde om testerna.

GPU-prestanda

3DMark-resultat från våra Snapdragon X Adreno är mer jämförbara med Arc 4 eller äldre Iris Xe 96 EUs snarare än Arc 8 eller Radeon 680M/780M-serien. Det innebär att de senaste integrerade GPU:erna från Intel och AMD kan vara mellan 50 och 80 procent snabbare än Qualcomm-lösningen när det gäller råa grafikhästkrafter.

Det verkar inte finnas någon prestandaförlust när man kör i balanserat läge istället för prestandaläge, vilket framgår av vår Fire Strike resultattabell ovan. Batteridrift minskar dock processorns prestanda avsevärt till skillnad från de flesta Core-U- eller Ryzen-U-drivna subnotebooks där mindre prestandaförluster är vanligare. Lenovo ThinkBook Lenovo ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 G4skulle till exempel inte uppleva något underskott alls mellan lägena Prestanda och Batteri. Vi upplevde inte heller några större prestandaförluster när vi körde den ARM-drivna Asus VivoBook på batteriström. HP säger att en BIOS-uppdatering (F.07) kommer snart för att ta itu med detta problem.

Prestanda för spel

Användare som är intresserade av en ARM-driven Windows PC för speländamål tittar inte på rätt plats eftersom detta Snapdragon-chip inte var designat för spelare. Med det sagt skryter Qualcomm notoriskt med förmågan att köra Baldur's Gate 3 vid 1080p och 30 FPS vilket omedelbart väcker uppmärksamhet hos de flesta granskare. Utan hjälp av FSR kan vi dock bara få ett genomsnitt på 23 FPS och 35 FPS på 1080p Low respektive 720p Low-inställningar. Prestanda i andra spel skulle vara en liknande besvikelse med resultat som kommer in mycket långsammare än den konkurrerande Arc 8 eller Radeon 680M som förutspås av de syntetiska 3DMark-resultaten ovan.

Det kanske värsta och mest märkbara problemet just nu är den ojämna bildhastigheten eller bildhoppningen som vi upplevde i de flesta testade spelen. Även om den genomsnittliga bildfrekvensen är hyfsad, som i Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, så inträffar bildhoppen mycket oftare än på ett Intel- eller AMD-alternativ, så att man blir distraherad. Qualcomm har definitivt en lång väg att gå innan deras drivrutiner kan bli lika mogna som konkurrenterna.

Systembuller

Fläktljudet är tystare än de flesta andra 14-tums subnotebooks. Den interna fläkten tenderar att stabiliseras på bara 25 dB(A) när du surfar på webben eller streamar video mot en tyst bakgrund på 23,4 dB(A) och är i princip ohörbar under användning. I värsta fall håller sig systemet strax under 35 dB(A) när du spelar eller kör mycket krävande uppgifter, vilket fortfarande är märkbart tystare än de flesta traditionella alternativ som MacBook Pro 14 eller ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12.

Temperatur

Den vänstra halvan av systemet är alltid varmare än den högra på grund av den asymmetriska kylningslösningen. Den heta punkten nära WASD-tangenterna kan nå över 40 C när den belastas jämfört med höger sida av tangentbordet som kan vara nästan 10 C svalare. Temperaturskillnaderna mellan de två halvorna av chassit är märkbara under användning, men aldrig obehagliga.

Batteritiden är utmärkt som man kan förvänta sig av en ARM-baserad maskin, men den är bara jämförbar med andra moderna Ryzen-U- eller Core-U-baserade alternativ som Dragonfly Pro eller ovannämnda Dell. Ägare kan förvänta sig cirka 13 timmars surfning i verkligheten på en full laddning.

Laddning från tom tar lite över två timmar med den medföljande nätadaptern, vilket är genomsnittligt för en subnotebook.

Om du vill övertyga en lekman att välja Windows on ARM framför traditionella alternativ från Apple eller andra, måste det utmärka sig i flera kategorier, inklusive prestanda, pris, batteritid och formfaktor. Låt oss ta en titt på var och en:

Prestanda. Prestandan är i bästa fall jämförbar med Core Ultra 7 155U/165U medan den i värsta fall är lika långsam som den äldre Core i7-1165G7, särskilt när det gäller enkärniga operationer. Grafikprestandan är också underväldigande jämfört med de senaste integrerade Arc- och Radeon-lösningarna från Intel respektive AMD.

Priset. Med ett pris på $1700 kostar HP EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 ungefär lika mycket som andra affärscentrerade Core Ultra 7 subnotebooks som Dell Latitude 7350 eller Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Batteritid. Körtiderna är utmärkta och längre än för de flesta subnotebooks från Intel eller AMD på grund av den höga prestandan per watt. Trots detta finns det Intel- och AMD-alternativ med jämförbara resultat, inklusive 2023 Dragonfly Pro eller Dell Latitude 9450 2-in-1.

Formfaktor. Den lilla storleken, den bärbara vikten och det tysta fläktljudet är höjdpunkterna i HP Qualcomm-maskinen. Men modeller som LG Gram 14, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Proeller ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 kan vara mindre eller till och med lättare.

Utmaningen med EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 är inte att det är en dålig maskin, utan att den nuvarande konkurrensen mellan Intel/AMD-maskiner är extremt tuff. Köpare har redan en handfull utmärkta subnotebooks att välja mellan (inklusive från HP:s egen portfölj) som kan matcha eller överträffa funktionerna och kapaciteten hos EliteBook Ultra G1q 14, särskilt när det gäller kompatibilitet. Således är det svårare att rekommendera EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 över många av de ovannämnda alternativen för de allra flesta användare.

EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 är en bra start för Qualcomm, men det kommer att behöva göra mycket mer eftersom det senaste från Intel och AMD är ett steg före för samma pris.

Många av bristerna hos EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 hade kunnat förlåtas om den hade lanserats till ett mycket lägre startpris än konkurrenterna. Tyvärr kostar den ungefär lika mycket utan att erbjuda några större fördelar när det gäller prestanda eller funktioner. Det är en bra start, men Qualcomm och PC-tillverkarna har en lång väg att gå innan Windows on ARM kan övertyga användarna om att ta steget.
